I read this in the late 90s, probably 1997-99 but definitely no later than 2000. A girl who's a very tidy, organized person and a very good student is made to sit next to another girl in her class who she thinks is very messy and probably also a poor student. She thinks that she's intended to set a good example for the other student but she eventually finds out that her teacher actually wanted her to become less uptight or something. At some point in the book she starts trying to be overly careless as a take-that to everybody. She's working on a school project that I think involves cutting pictures out of magazines to make a collage of places you'd like to go; she applies big messy globs of glue which ordinarily she would never do. (I think the end result is that she and the messy girl become good friends, but I don't remember any real details of the plot.)
