Searching for either the author or title of a fiction or romance novel about a girl whose mother dies. Something happens to her and she goes away for a while. Her dad is having an affair with a French woman in the area who has a son named Maximilian. The father eventually marries the mistress and they have a daughter together. The older daughter returns when the father passes away. She doesn’t get along with the step mother because she blames.
The story takes place somewhere in the south, maybe in Louisiana somewhere. There’s a cook and her son who are also part of the story. There’s older daughter eventually falls for Max, who’s been left in charge of his stepfather’s business.
