tHERE by Pauline O’Connell and Ellen Martin-Friel – ELLEN MARTIN-FRIEL LIMITED EDITION 2025

A PICTORIAL REVIEW

No. 53 of 75 copies
Designed, typeset and letterpress printed by Ellen Martin-Friel while in residency at Distillers Press, Dublin.
Signed by author and printer.
Three separate four-page accordion-folded loose leaves, the book forms a triptych representing three days of performative writing, with the folded panels taking on a sculptural quality reminiscent of the remote corrugated metal bus shelter in which they were written.
Separate brown folded paper colophon and explanation printed in red, numbered and signed.
Grey cloth Solander case lined with bright orange paper, paper title label on edge.
27.9x20cm.
Unpaginated
€299

A most unusual but interesting “book” that has been beautifully produced.

One of my favorite releases of the year. Beautiful, inventive, and a wonderful application of Oulipo techniques into concrete poetry. Highly recommended.

Very cool book, >1 wcarter: ! Thanks for the pictures and write-up. It reminds me of some of the books from Warren Lehrer, specifically his "French Fries" and "I Mean You Know," which also employ some typographic tricks to represent conversations.

Thank you for sharing this - I can honestly say this is not a book for me, but I appreciate what it's doing and it is a lovely work of art.

Well done as always. I liked the printing on this one, but the text didn’t really land in an artistic sense. Reminds me of some Kaldewey pieces in that it’s only really tangentially a book, but is much more fully experienced in display. I’m really excited for her future stuff, really nice trajectory so far. If anyone has framed it or hung it up would love to see photos. I feel like it would be more fully experienced over a longer timeframe.

The case is nice but it could have been thinner, but I think there’s a point where the form factor doesn’t really work.
