I know this one might be a stretch but maybe you can help?
I'm look for a compilation set of books I was addicted to as a kid during some hard times and they were my first real loves but my memory has entirely failed me.
- These were published prior to 1997 but likely after 1950-1970. (I'm from a small town so the shelves weren't often updated.)
- I don't think they're Grimm's fairy tales (the vibe does not fit- I didn't reach my creepy faze until much later).
- The hard covers of the books were in Navy, Green, Purple, (maybe a 4th one?). They were lightly embossed but I don't recall them having gold or silver-leaf in the embossing.
- I don't recall any illustrations in the books, mostly text dense.
- I recall the spines being around 2-3 inches thick. And they were probably 5"x8".
- I was reading these in 3-5th grade but I was an advanced reader. Still they were rarely checked out in my elementary/middle school.
- There was one that had a lot of Arthurian legends - more than the typical sword in the stone story.
- One of them seemed to have a lot of mystical stories that were more folklore or monsters.
- And I think perhaps one was about different knights/princess vaguely historical romance stories--- I was at the time obsessed with the true history behind Pocahontas and I feel like this history might have been included in one of the books but maybe not. I may have just read similar at the time and I don't put a lot of weight on this as a factor.

Maybe something by Ruth Manning-Sanders or Roger Lancelyn Green? Both published multiple collections of myths and folktales retold for children, with the kind of themes you mentioned.

It *might* be The Book Of series by Ruth Manning-Sanders, but I put that on the lower end of possible, unfortunately. These are somehow too specific in their categories. The books I'm looking for would combine dragons, goblins and mythical creatures rather than having each to their own books.
Once Long Ago: Folk & Fairy Tales of the World by Roger Lancelyn Green this is a different book that I've also been looking for.
The few peeks I get into his books though, I unfortunately don't think this is it either. Though I did, it seems, Robin Hood and King Arthur books but again I think what I'm looking for might have had a more generic Folklore or Legends title and contained more stories.
If there were slipcovers on the books I'm remembering, they were also very generic with limited color pallets and illustration and looked very like the boardbook under them.

Andrew Langs' Blue Fairy Book and others - though his collection of King Arthur stories did not come in the rainbow series as far as I know.
The Fairy Books had folklore from all over the world and there was a "Violet" and a "Green" one. They're Victorian but were and are reprinted in lots of different formats and would have been in most older library collections.

These are it! The collection I'm looking at even has the true stories! Absolute hero, thank you!
