Please help me find this kids fantasy book I read ~30 years ago in my teens (early 1990s).

I'm pretty sure this was a trilogy, involving young kids. One plot device in book 3, I think, involved the kids receiving a magical compass that, when held facing an enemy, would reveal whether they were friend or foe. However, before they set on their journey, an enemy manages to corrupt this device and make it say the opposite, so that they will trust their enemies and mistrust their friends. I think this third book involved traveling up / into a mountain, and maybe the word "mountain" was in the title.

The Mountain of Magic by Beverley Nichols. It's the third of the Enchanted Forest series.
The Imp, Jill and the witch
The Mountain of Magic has a character called the Imp, who is friends with a little girl called Jill. He is not caught up in the treasure hunting mania; he quite rightly distrusts Miss Smith and wonders whether the treasure really exists. When he tells Jill this, she won't listen. Rather than think for herself and listen to her friend, she believes what the compass that Miss Smith reversed to make good people show as evil and vice versa tells her.
