Children's book about an Uncle telling his nephew tall tales

Hi, I've been trying for a long time to find the name of a random book my parents got me when I was a kid in the mid-late 80's (though I am pretty sure they got it from a second hand store so it is probably older).
It was a light-hearted fictional anthology involving a young boy (who I believe was staying home sick from school) and his Uncle (my faint memory says it was "Uncle Dan" but that hasn't helped when googling it) came to look after him and told him a bunch of tall tales. One of the tales was of the Uncle getting kidnapped by alien dogs who were upset that dogs were essentially slaves on earth. I think he ended up saving the day because he happened to have a saveloy (the terminology used in the book) on him or something.
You would think for a book that I loved that I would remember more details but unfortunately that's all I have got!
