We’ve just added a feature allowing you to customize the fields shown on the Edit Book page.
At the top of the page, we’ve added a Custom option to the existing viewing styles—All | Minimal | Dates | Reviews—with a cog for editing that will allow you to set the default fields you see when editing your books. (All options are now sticky.)

When you click the cog, a popup window will appear, where you can select the fields you want to see displayed.

Once you have selected the fields you want, the Edit Book page will show only those fields, and it will remember your choice the next time you go to the page.
If you’ve selected Custom, the Book Detail page will display the same fields you’ve selected on the Edit Book page.
Let us know what you think!

Nice! Now I don't see the parts I don't use.

The irony of this is, it made me realize that I use almost all of these fields at least occasionally, except for the Private Book field -- and I'd probably use that if I trusted it. :-)

Cool!

Neat! Like >4 waltzmn: I use most of the fields (some only rarely), but I removed Lexile, other call number, private book, summary, and all the identifier numbers except LCCN. It doesn't make a huge difference, but I appreciate it anyway.

I love it! The customization even applies to the Manual Add page, which will be a huge help.
>1 knerd.knitter: When you say the customization is sticky, is that per account or per device?

>8 knerd.knitter: oh, nice! this will be especially helpful when adding a bunch of academic papers or Want to Read via manual add, when I don't have bibliographic data but do have comments/doi, etc.
(I just learned JSTOR has a new, free, "independent researcher" option for users, 100 articles per month, too. Hopefully I'll find a lot there to use this new feature 😁)

Love it! Of course, if you add one feature that just prompts a request for another... Can you do it for the Quick Edit on the add books page too?

I just tweaked mine and I love having control like that. Thank you.
@keristars good point about the batch work. AND thank you for the new membership option on JSTOR.

Nice. My favorite part is removing the 'private book', it was way too close where I could accidentally click it :D

I mean this is just a delight, pure and simple! A fabulous addition. Thanks!!!
(That said—and I know this change didn't cause this, it just brought it back to my attention since it puzzles me every time I edit a book now—I am confused about how/why "Summary" has gotten lumped in with "Item Comments" and why it appears before the two comments fields ... if it must be in that section, could it at least be at the bottom?)

None of the Physical attributes boxes are checked yet they persist on the edit page. Seems like they shouldn't.
17knerd.knitter
>16 Bookmarque: So you have the Physical Summary items all unchecked and are still seeing those fields on the page when you are on the Custom view?
18Bookmarque
Bah. User error. I tried the Customize button when it was on the Overview page, not the Edit page. Sorry. Making changes to the Customize panel on the Edit page does what it should. Sorry.

>18 Bookmarque: No problem! Glad it's not a bug.

I just set my custom form and added a dissertation I started reading last year. How very nice to be able to skip all the fields I leave empty and still have the comments box to include the JHU Library URL for it (I've downloaded the PDF, of course, but I like to save the link in case I need to re-download or want to send it to someone else).
I love how it complements the catalogue for editing books, too.

That has made my edit page much shorter.Great! And very happy not to have to be aware of the Private box.

Could it be possible to toggle between views on the "Book Details" page in addition to the "Edit Book" page? Currently if I want to see a field that's not part of my custom view I have to open "edit book", change the view, then click "cancel".
(I would also be fine if the "Book Details" page was set to show "all" all the time, since it doesn't show blank fields anyway.)

25norabelle414
>24 knerd.knitter: Ooh, a toggle. I love it!
26norabelle414
>24 knerd.knitter: If I flip the toggle from on to off (to show all details) and then refresh the page (or go to a different page), the toggle disappears and the next time I edit a book the "edit book" page is set to "all"
27knerd.knitter
>26 norabelle414: Yes, that's how it's set up. It's switching your view mode, so when you turn the toggle off it sets your view mode back to All.
28norabelle414
>27 knerd.knitter: Right, but then the toggle disappears so I can't set it back to custom
29knerd.knitter
>28 norabelle414: I don't want the toggle there all the time, so it only shows when you enter that page with custom chosen.

I was looking around and I see a caption on a field called OCLC. How does that get populated?
31bnielsen
>30 ulmannc: It comes from the library source, you added the book from. I have only a dozen books with OCLC filled out and eight of them are from Helsinki Metropolitan Libraries :-)
32ulmannc
>31 bnielsen: Thanks. The policies and rules for OCLC are rather complicated so I'm guessing a lot of libraries just don't bother with it, here in the USA. I have to admit my sample of libraries is rather small, about 10 or 11 and only 2 or 3 are my normal "go to's".

Does the customizeable function only work on a PC or will it work on Android phone or tablet?
34keristars
>33 ulmannc: It works on my android devices. :) My settings are remembered between my phone and tablet, too.
