I’m just about to read some of Newman’s work. My classmate is writing his term paper on him and has gotten me interested, especially in the question of how the Church understands time and matter.

I haven't read anything by him in decades, but he very much impressed me years ago.

Recognition of St. Newman is ecumenical celebration, leaders say (NCR)

Pope Leo XIV's recognition of St. John Henry Newman as a "doctor of the church" will be an ecumenical celebration, a sign of esteem for the excellence and ongoing relevance of his teaching, first as an Anglican and then as a Roman Catholic, said a key figure in preparing the declaration. Anglican Archbishop Stephen Cottrell of York, currently the ranking prelate of the Church of England, was scheduled to lead an Anglican delegation to the formal proclamation Nov. 1 by Leo of St. Newman as a doctor of the church...

"I shall drink to the Pope, if you please, still to Conscience first, and to the Pope afterwards."

Saint John Henry Newman, quoted in The Tablet, 25 October 2025, p5.

My classmate, Luke, is president of the Newman Club at college this year. He offered a talk on St. Newman last evening in the fireside room adjacent to the chapel.
Besides myself, two other students attended, both still in their rustic flannel shirts, work boots and carhart caps; straight from their agricultural duties.
They each introduced themselves to me with an old world grace. I had met JJ once before at church. He’s a cradle Catholic. Owen is a convert. So is Luke. I am so impressed with their serious seeking and study of Catholicism. The conversation went deep into history and theology, and I was challenged to keep up.
