Looking for a children’s book (read in the 1980s) about a boy hiding a bird that dies by accident

Hi everyone,
I’m trying to find a children’s or young adult novel I read in Spain in the 1980s (it could be from the 1960s–1980s originally, possibly translated from another language like English, French, or Swedish).

The story is about a boy who secretly keeps a bird in his house — maybe a crow or a rook. He hides it from the adults. At some point, an accident happens: a door or window closes suddenly because of a draft, and the bird is fatally injured (possibly dies instantly). The boy is devastated, feeling guilty and heartbroken.

It was a realistic story, not fantasy. The tone was sad and emotional.
I think it might have been published by Alfaguara or another major Spanish children’s imprint, but I’m not sure.

I read it in Spain, but it may have been a translation from another language.
Does anyone remember a story like this?

Thank you so much — it has stayed with me for years, but I can’t recall the title or author.
