Happy Winter Solstice to all of our members in the northern hemisphere! It is the shortest day of the year, and has therefore also been named Short Story Day. What are some of your favorite short stories and short story writers, Thingamabrarians?

A couple of my all-time favorite short stories are quite appropriate for the season: A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote and The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry. One of my favorite short story collections is The Language of Cats by Spencer Holst. A couple of favorites that I’ve discovered in recent years are Eley Williams (Attrib. and Other Stories) and Sarah Pinsker (Sooner or Later Everything Falls into the Sea).

Labyrinths by Jorge Luis Borges

They're all worth reading :)

I've always thought the short story is where Stephen King does his best work. Pretty much every collection is worth perusing, but especially Night Shift and Skeleton Crew.

Another collection I've enjoyed is from Patrick McGrath - always the unexpected and packs in so much. So does Patricia Highsmith and Shirley Jackson.

And for something completely different, especially from its author, is The Machine Stops by E.M. Forster. It probably appears in many collections, but if you google it, you can probably find it by itself.

>3 Charon07: I love both A Christmas Memory and The Gift of the Magi! I have read (and would like to own) two gorgeous illustrated editions of the latter, with the full text, one illustrated by P.J. Lynch and the other by Sonja Danowski.

Two of my all-time favorite short stories are Bartleby the Scrivener by Herman Melville and "Death by Landscape" by Margaret Atwood, which can be found in her collection Wilderness Tips.

I also love the short stories of L.M. Montgomery, which can be found in collections like Chronicles of Avonlea and Further Chronicles of Avonlea, published in the author's lifetime, and a number of thematic collections published posthumously, containing some of the many short stories she published in magazines. These include titles like Akin to Anne: Tales of Other Orphans and Along the Shore: Tales by the Sea, as well as a number of others.
