Glad to see you'll be back for 2026! Sorry I hadn't set up the new threads yet. Been very busy the past week with lots of family visitors but will try to do that today or tomorrow.

January reads
1. The Concert ticket
A sort of Kafkaesque tale about queues in Communist Russia, hard to explain, but once I read the first chapter, I was hooked.
2. The Migration
Decent YA about young people becoming ill and then changing into something else. Moral dilemmas. It was a good train read.
3. Shuggie Bain
I have had this for a while as I wanted to be in the right head space. I really liked it, though I recognised the stories within.
4. The Wedding People
I enjoyed this, again a good book for a trip. A woman books into her dream hotel to die, but gets embroiled in a wedding.
5. The Gatsby Gambit
I was sent a free copy of this. I am not a huge Gatsby fan, but there were enough twists in the murder mystery
6. Maude Horton’s Glorious Revenge
I liked this a lot, it caught my eye at my local independent bookshop. A woman tries to find out what really happened to her sister. Set in the 1850s.
7. Wild Geese
An expat loving in Scandinavia is visited by the girlfriend she was with before her transition. Lots to unpack here, from complicated relationships to fresh starts.
8. The factory
Another impulse buy from the independent bookshop, they have a great selection of Korean and Japanese books. This is about people working at an unusual factory with unusual flora and fauna. Odd, but interesting.

February reads
9. The Best Things
A family in crisis, fine, but ultimately I didn't really care about the characters.
10. On the future of food Rebel Takes
A short read, but interesting. How good connects so much in our lives.
11. The Leviathan
My second by the author, a gothic read about a woman possessed. I liked it, good for the darker months.
12. The Daughters of Madurai
This was really good, a dual timeline- a young woman in a small village is desperate to keep hold of her unborn child and a family is returning to India to see family. Family secrets that will change the course of the current generation.
13. The Women
I read most of this in one day. The titular women are the nurses who served in Vietnam. Love, loss, PTSD and dealing with the indifference and even down right hatred for veterans returning from the unpopular war.

>17 soffitta1: I've heard many good things about The Women. Your comments just made me that much more determined to read it.

>17 soffitta1: I'll have to add The Women to my growing TBR list!

I will be looking out for more by the author!
March
14. Baba Dunja's Last Love
A short book set in the aftermath of Chernobyl - random, but I enjoyed it.
15. The republic of love
I enjoyed this, a relationship from before the couple have met, but with their lives interconnecting more and more, through to them getting together and beyond. I haven't read a Carol Shields book for a while, so it was nice to get reimmersed.
16. Hera
I read this in a oner on the train, it's not often you see Hera's side. I enjoyed it, especially the take on Hera's children.
17. Hare House
A book where nothing is quite what it seems. A good read for the train.
18. The half life of Valery K
Rather different to the last book I read by the author, but I liked the shift in setting.

:) You won't regret it!
April reads
19. Pastoralia
1001 book - short stories. Not really what I was expecting! Quite random.
20. Chateau d'Argol
I found this turgid, I only finished it because it was so short.
21. The Tyranny of Flies
Strange, but compelling read about a family unravelling at the top of a dictatorship. Unsettling, darkly funny at times, but rather intriguing.
I also read 3 other books from my TBR pile, found unregistered on my shelves.

May
22. Achilles' Fiancee
I enjoyed this a lot - possibly because of how much I learnt about Greek history.
23. Cinema Love
So much to unpack here, both in terms of complex relationships and how much our personal history can haunt us. Good read
24. The Weather in the Streets
I hadn't read the first book, but I think it didn't matter. I have read a few books from the same period in recent months, it is interesting to see how women's lives have changed as well as seeing some of the same challenges.
25. Everything and the Moon
Very easy read
26. Eurotrash
This is hard to describe, I found myself really invested, but unable to really describe it well. Give it a go!
27. A single thread
I am a fan of the author and I liked the backdrop to the story - bell ringing and making kneelers. It seems I am drawn to the interwar years at the moment.
28. Zagreb Noir
I visited Zagreb last Summer, so was keen to revisit from my sofa. A mixed bag, but good to get a feel.

>23 soffitta1: Looks like some good books there.

>23 soffitta1: I've read a couple of the Akashic Noir books (for Montreal and Toronto) and I liked them. The stories do seem to be of mixed quality but they give a good sense of the city's atmosphere.
