Unable to change covers

This is on the web version of LibraryThing.

I added three books to my collection today, but two of the three will not let me change their covers. The first book did not give me any problems.

After adding two more books, I tried uploading new covers. I was warned that the covers were larger than 10MB, so I had to resize the images, but then it allowed me to select them and click on Upload Image. For both books, the page reloaded, and the cover I tried uploading did not show up at all. I did not receive any errors.

I tried resizing the covers to under 8MB as that was the initial message given when trying to upload a new cover, but they still would not stick.

I tried deleting one of the books and re-adding them, then tried to upload a cover, but it still would not work.

You need to at least give the URLs of the books you are having trouble with. Details of your operating system and browser might also be helpful.

>2 MarthaJeanne:
I'm on Windows 11 using the Firefox browser.

I messed with the pixel sizing on some of the covers which somehow resolved the issue for some books (I added a third book that had the same problem), but I'm still not sure what the issue is as I'm still unable to upload my own cover to this one: https://www.librarything.com/work/30604210/book/303398144

To clarify, when I was resizing the images before, I was only adjusting the image quality so that it would fall below the 10MB file size limit. Actually sizing down the pixels allowed me to upload some of the covers, but not all of them. It's inconsistent enough that I'm not sure what the problem is.

For reference, here are the other two books that I was originally having an issue with that I was able to finally upload my own covers:

>3 swordthief: Were you able to figure it out? I see a cover image on your remaining book, now: https://www.librarything.com/work/30604210/book/303398144

>4 kristilabrie: It is still defaulting to the one it chose when I added it. It won't let me upload my own cover even though it falls below the 10MB file size limit (I know that it says 8MB, but it doesn't kick it out unless it exceeds 10MB, and even if I drop it below 8MB, it still isn't letting me upload my own cover).

These ones are doing the same thing:

For reference, here are some examples of covers I've uploaded that did finally work:

>5 swordthief: I would make sure you're staying under the specified 8MB file size limit, just in case. As long as your images are under 8MB and they're still failing:

1. Can you tell me what format your failing cover images are in? (They should be either .jpg, .gif, .bmp or .png.)
2. Another random piece of data worth checking, maybe: if you go to https://www.librarything.com/servicetester.php, do you see any services that are failing for you?
3. If you try uploading the same images in a different browser, do they work?

>6 kristilabrie:
1. All of my images are JPG format.
2. The LibraryThing Service Tester says everything is working.
3. I compressed a cover image to 7.86MB and tried to upload it using the Chrome browser, and it still did not stick.

>7 swordthief: Thanks for your testing! Are you able to email me all of the failing cover images you have, to kristi(AT)librarything(DOT)com? This will help me do more testing on my end. I appreciate your patience in the meantime.

>8 kristilabrie: I just sent you an email. Apologies as I don't normally log into LT every day and often miss notifications.

>9 swordthief: Thanks! When I downloaded your covers for Lightbreakers and The Women, they're still coming up at over 8MB file size. They probably need to be brought down more to upload properly.

Re: your 3rd image for Alchemy of Secrets, I tested further and it looks like our uploader expands images during upload, which can push them over the limit. I'm asking the developers about this to see what can be done.

Note: I tested a batch of cover images sized from 4.9mb to 8.7mb and they all uploaded successfully via Mac/Chrome. I'm guessing Windows browsers might handle the image upload differently, causing the images to get expanded during upload which pushes them over the 8mb limit. I'm not sure, though, asking @conceptDawg about it.

>12 kristilabrie: Thanks for the update. That's strange that those covers are showing as over 8MB though because I did shrink all of them to below 8MB.

>13 swordthief: I agree; there must be some other processing that's pushing them over the limit, depending on browser and the image uploader or something.

I'm doing some major changes to the image system this week. Hopefully they will solve some of these issues. A bigger upload limit is one of those, but there will always need to be some upload limit.

I am having the same problem.

This is the file I am working on. https://www.librarything.com/work/35627344/covers/305922884

This is not the right cover for the book. The correct cover would not load. The data for that file is .jpg, size 4.12 MB

I tried a different cover, the one showing, and I was able to upload it.

This is the data of the cover photo.
.jpg size 1.92 MB, created January 31.

I will try and reduce the size of the file and see if I can get it to upload.

Thanks you for your work on this!

Success. I cropped the first picture dropped it from 4.12 meg to 886KB. I was able to upload the image. (It is a better one anyway!)

The size of the file is the problem, even at 4.12M.

I hope this helps.
