Bad times in caves

Hello, BRR! Hope you're all well!

I enjoyed The Luminous Dead and was thinking about other books where characters have a very very bad time while exploring a cave (something that I have zero interest in doing myself). However, except for a vaguely-remembered children's book from the public library in the 90s, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer I don't think I've read any books where at least a part of the story involves having a terrible time while lost in a cave.

I would love some recommendations of other books that include this particular bad experience! Genre doesn't matter: horror, fantasy, short stories, graphic novels, whatever! Would love a murder mystery while also having an awful time in a cave. Could there be a romance with a terrible spelunking disaster? Bonus points for cave diving, which sounds extra awful!

As far as nonfiction, I have a couple on my radar already:
Trapped! The Story of Floyd Collins about a really terrible incident that was widely covered by the media;
and Into the Planet by Jill Heinerth, who seems like she really enjoys her job and probably has good times in caves.

(I will also accept movie recommendations, as I loooooooved The Descent.)

What Stalks the Deep by T. Kingfisher springs to mind.

I've read The Luminous Dead it is indeed very immersive.
Seconding What Stalks the Deep
Others that might scratch the itch:
Her Silhouette, Drawn in Water Set on a cavern like prison planet
Driving the Deep Set deep in an ocean on an ice planet

There's the film Touching the Void (touchstone goes to the book, which I haven't read, but should be similar, it's about mountain climbing but there's also an abyss).
And there's a creature feature The Cave which came out the same year as The Descent.

Against all odds thirteen lessons and aquanaut are three accounts from the rescuers of the Thai Cave rescue. Not technically bad things, although there were deaths.

Beverly Connor includes caving in the first few of her detective novels.

ZRT was particularly poor at describing them.

the hot zone is probably the closest to a bad thing!

As an active (ish) caver myself I tag any reference to caving in my library which will give you some more hints - a search of "cav*" gets over 100 hits with a few of those wishlist and many simply guidebooks. They should mostly be reviews, feel free to message if you're curious about details of a specific book.

I read The Descent when it came out and loved it, didn't see the movie though. I think there is a sequel that was not quite as good, but might be worth your while. Another is Still Life with Crows by Doug Preston and Lincoln Child - it's part of the Pendergast series, but will work just fine as a stand alone.

I can only think of 2 ya fantasies Tombs of Atuan by Le Guin or City of Ember by Dupreu (author spelling uncertan)

>5 Bookmarque: Just finished Still Life with Crows, and it was in fact a Really Terrible Time in a Cave, which was exactly what I was looking for! Thanks! The Descent is supposed to arrive this afternoon. :)

I forgot all about this but Meddling Kids features a rather terrible cave/mine experience! ☺️ Perhaps my subconscious remembered and that's what drove me to a re-read.🤔

Forgot to say The Exile Waiting by Vonda McIntyre which is an underground city dystopia - the same world as her Dreamsnake but no overlap in plot or characters.
