i hope this forum is still active because i cannot for the life of me find this book. i read it maybe three years ago. it was hardback, and the cover was a dark blue with gold lettering and maybe a flower on the front.

i can't remember the main character's name, but she was a high school girl whose sister had gone missing or died or something. she finds a bunch of weird things around her sister's room, like clumps of hair and blood that she presumed were spells. somehow or another, the FMC becomes friends with a boy named david. david comes from a very secret, small kingdom of magical people (i have a feeling their magic/mythos was celtic-inspired: i remember tons of irish-sounding and looking words, maybe a character named sibyl or something close). david ends up going through a few trials that are somewhat related to the FMC and her sister. he has to go through like... blood letting?? as a trial or punishment or something? and also there's this girl in his secret community who is extremely manipulative and she gives the FMC a tea that like makes her pass out.

a major part of this book is that david's people are able to use words to create magic. for example, there's a scene where david is on his motorcycle. there's a glowing word that appears out of the leather on the handlebars, and david takes out a switchknife to cut out that piece of leather. he can see these words pop up as they come, and if he keeps the item it's on, he can learn the magic embedded in the word. i think our FMC learns to do this? but her missing sister for sure did.

i also remember a scene about like,, FMC being kidnapped briefly? i don't remember why. there was also a lot of birds in the book. it couldn't have been set very long ago because i'm pretty sure david and FMC texted each other.

maybe The Wickerlight? I don't have a copy to look through, but in searching a preview of the ebook I see something about cutting a word out of a steering wheel.
