I think this was a Scholastic book, probably from the 1970s, and might have been published with more than one title.
It was about a Native American girl who moves from the reservation to the city with her family. I think it took place in Minnesota and they were Ojibwe because I remember them harvesting wild rice. She wore a ring with her family totem, which was a lion. Her brother ran away from the family, calling himself “Jim White”.
The important focus was her wearing moccasins instead of the shoes she hated and being bullied at school until she won a race while wearing them.
Sound familiar?

I searched archive.org and it looks like Susan by Barbara C. Smucker.
