I don't know about you, but to me it feels ickier and ickier to buy from the major publishers which gobble up the little ones like so much krilll. They don't seem to have a literary mission any more. They may as well be a factory for OEM car parts.
I know there are new and real pressures on them, including the decline in readers. But that doesn't change the dissatisfaction I have--a reader!--primarily with the slapdash editing. I buy books. I want them to be ones that give me that sense of money well spent.
That's my soapbox. And now the ongoing updated directory of Independent Publishers mentioned in the messages below.

—Essays are published under the "Undelivered Lectures" series.“We want to provide an outlet for discursive prose of exceptional literary and cultural value that’s more lasting than a magazine piece but less substantial than a 300-page hardback,” said Transit publisher Adam Levy. “Undelivered Lectures is an opportunity to introduce readers to boundary-pushing works of narrative nonfiction.”
—Translated Children's books are under their "Transit Children's Editions", "highlighting bold, imaginative, visually distinctive children’s books from around the world."

Lastly, it was this article https://www.thecut.com/article/booktok-i-who-have-never-known-men-novel.html that inspired me to create this topic. The article is about the surprising success of I Who Have Never Known Men and how it was this nonprofit independent publisher, founded in only 2015, that brought this work back to attention of hundreds of thousands of readers. Me, included.
