Strauss's Arabella.
Debra Lew Harder and Ira Siff present a performance of Richard Strauss's Arabella from the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, with Rachel Willis-Sørensen in the title role. Set in the urban melting pot of Vienna around the 1860s, the opera's plot revolves around the Waldner family's attempts to keep up appearances as a member of the Austrian landed gentry. Having consulted a fortune teller about the state of the family finances, Countess Adelaide von Waldner, sung by mezzo Karen Cargill, learns about a possible marriage on the cards for her daughter Arabella that might raise the family out of debt. The clairvoyant warns, however, about the danger posed by a second daughter Zdenka, who the matriarch raised as a boy to save the family from the ruinous expense of introducing two daughters into society. In this sumptuous production by director Otto Schenk, bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny takes the role of the dashing count who sweeps Arabella off her feet, with bass Brindley Sherratt performing as patriarch Count Waldner, while tenor Pavol Breslik inhabits the role of Matteo - the young lieutenant and suitor of Arabella - with whom Zdenka has fallen in love. With the dramatic love triangle duly sprung, Strauss's compositional way with the soprano voices is showcased magnificently, and his orchestral craftsmanship evident in the touching final scene, where the listener is transported into a musical experience of forgiveness, wisdom, and the burgeoning of true love. Richard Strauss: Arabella. Rachel Willis-Sørensen (soprano: Arabella), Louise Alder (soprano: Zdenka), Karen Cargill (mezzo: Adelaide), Julie Roset (soprano: Fiakermilli), Pavol Breslik (tenor: Matteo), Tomasz Konieczny (bass-baritone: Mandryka), Brindley Sherratt (bass: Waldner), Orchestra and Chorus of the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Nicholas Carter (conductor).

Described by tonight's conductor Susanna Mälkki as 'one of the most important works of our time', Finnish composer Saariaho's final opera depicts the consequences of a violent school shooting in Helsinki, as well as the trauma left in its wake. Anchored by mezzo Joyce DiDonato as a waitress, the cast also includes Finnish ethno-pop singer Vilma Jää in the roles of both a grieving mother and the daughter she lost in the shooting. Soprano Jacquelyn Stucker and tenor Miles Mykkanen are a young couple at whose wedding, a decade after the tragedy, the mother of one of the victims comes face to face with the family of the perpetrator. Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin.
Debra Lew Harder and Ira Siff present a live performance of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, starring Iurii Samoilov and Asmik Grigorian. When bookish Tatiana meets Eugene she is immediately smitten and naively declares her feelings in a letter. He dismisses her, but years later and much too late realises he loves her back. The opera is based on Pushkin's verse novel, which reimagines the Byronic romantic anti-hero as the definitive bored Russian aristocrat caught between convention and ennui. Tchaikovsky, similarly, took western European operatic forms and transformed them into an authentic and undeniably Russian work. At the core of the opera is the young girl Tatiana, who grows from a sentimental adolescent into a complete woman in one of the operatic stage's most convincing character developments. Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin. Asmik Grigorian (soprano: Tatiana), Iurii Samoilov (baritone: Eugene Onegin), Stanislas de Barbeyrac (tenor: Lenski), Maria Barakova (mezzo: Olga), Larissa Diadkova (mezzo: Filippyevna), Alexander Tsymbalyuk (bass-baritone: Prince Gremin), Metropolitan Opera Chorus and Orchestra, Timur Zangiev (conductor).
