I’m looking for a fantasy novel I read as a child (probably borrowed from a library in Australia, circa early 2000s), possibly published earlier (70s–90s, likely UK or Australian edition). It was a stand-alone book, not part of a series.
What I can remember:
The protagonists were maybe a young female giant and a human boy.
The setting was a mythic/fantasy world — not Earth, not modern.
Giants were part of that world’s society (not hidden, not just one friendly giant among humans).
They travelled through forests, hills, possibly marshland, on a long journey/quest.
They encountered dangers and unfriendly people or creatures along the way.
Names felt fantastical / not typical human names.
The giantess was roughly dressed, and there was imagery of stones, hills, forests — possibly even a large important rock.
Tone was serious / atmospheric, not comedic.
The giants had large, slightly ugly/dull features (not cartoonish).
The story had lots of rich details and was a full-length novel for middle school to teen readers.
The front cover had shades of browns and greys, nothing that would jump out at you. The title may have been the names of the protagonists (eg: Olga & Hugo).
I think the story involved them trying to find someone important (maybe another person/giant or an object).
I’ve seen a very similar description on Reddit (giants with a boy, following a star to find her sister), but no one there identified the title yet.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

could it be South Star by Betsy Gould Hearne?

Maybe Blade of the Poisoner? One of the friends is a giantess, and they're going to this castle to un-poison the main character. I know the LibraryThing description doesn't say that much, but the whole book is available on archive.org if you want to see a more detailed description.
