I’m finding older books are not in the searchable catalogs.
I’d like to have an option in both website and app to add books to the larger catalog.
This may be helpful to the larger community for more complete collections.
I have many books I can’t add.

If you can't find books in the sources, you can add them manually. The link is at the bottom left of the Add Books page. This does not make ant difference to the next person who wants to enter it, as LT is not a source.
BTW, Data in Amazon for older books tends to be really bad. You will have more luck if you try OverCat and Library of Congress.

>1 BookMadder: There is no larger catalog in LT (unlike Goodreads for example). LT is a collection of everyone’s individual collections. And LT cannot be used as a source.
As a result, you can add any books you want to your catalog (and as >2 MarthaJeanne: explained, you can use the manual option if you cannot find it in a source) but you cannot do anything to make it possible for someone to use your copy directly when adding their own books (they can always copy paste of course but they will need to do a manual add unless a source has it).

What sources are you using? A major research and/or legal deposit library ought to be useful for older books.

>4 konallis: 333/340 are Amazon.
For books in languages other than English, it would also help to try libraries that work in those languages.

This is not 100% true. There is a workaround but it is an advanced topic that requires a browser plugin (TamperMonkey for Chrome) and a userscript (LP Copy Book 3.0).
With this, one can go to a detail page and copy most of the field data to a blank Manual Add form.
This has been redeveloped a couple times as the LT structure changes. I did work on the more recent one and we talk about it in the Hacking LibraryThing group.
It is not for the average user but it can solve specific use cases.
But in the regular system your statement is certainly true.
