NPM 2026, Day 2 Go Local
Missouri is a bit far for me but I do love the vibes of that Slam. Sounds like just what we could all use in these uncertain times. (And a $1500 first prize ain't too shabby, either.)
While it's still early April, it's the perfect time to check for poetry celebrations in your area.
Check your local library's calendar on their website. Maybe a nearby College or University, or even a public school is hosting some events. If you have a local Poetry Society or Arts Council, see what they might be up to. Perhaps there is a community calendar in your area, often a feature on a local PBS radio station (in the US). Sometimes a place of worship will also feature a special poetry event.
Maybe there have been events you've always meant to go to, like a local bar or pub that hosts open poetry nights. Perhaps there is even a distant annual event you've had a hankering to attend. Might be time to check out those dates and places. Definitely check bookstores for special poetry events or promotional sales.
Of course, there is always your own personal library. I bet there is a book of poetry, or twenty, there.
What poetry events will you attend or what poetry books will you be reading in April?
With every post of this month, you are welcomed to also comment with a poem you've found or with a poem you've written that you think will go with this day's message.

Well, doesn't look like much poetry is going on in my location. :(
I just checked my public library's calendar. Nothing poetry related. I even used their chat feature and asked if they had anything planned. They do not. I then asked if they allowed volunteers to host programs, like a poetry one. They do! I retire this year, so I just might coordinate something with the events person for 2027.
I checked our local Barnes and Noble, too. (We have no independent bookstores here any more. A huge loss to the community!) They show nothing planned. Only sale is for hardback best sellers, none of which, surprise surprise, are Poetry.
I have a few more things to check, some further afield. We'll see.....
I envy you guys living in or near big cities. Would love to hear about any poetry adventures you have this month.

One of my local libraries is having a poetry workshop this weekend that I'm going to try to attend: https://www.menlopark.gov/Government/Departments/Library-and-Community-Services/....
I think it was Debi who asked if anyone had done a "readymade poem" on another thread. This is it, sort of? Not quite signing your name to something complete, but putting it together from found words.
