I'm working my way through Harvey Sachs' Toscanini: Musician of Conscience. Not only was Toscanini one of the most important conductors of the late 19th and 20th centuries (he had a long career), the way he stood up to Mussolini was inspiring. His recordings are still very much worth listening for, even if they aren't up to the latest audio standards.

In college - way back when - a friend had a poster in his room of Toscanini that said "Art in the Shadow of Politics."
