I’m looking for a book I read from the library in 1974. It was hard back. It was a stand alone novel. Story was about a young woman who lost her family and was living with her father’s sister. I don’t remember it being about a certain religion but it was set in early 1800’s and the family had decided to go west by crossing the Mississippi River on a flat boat with some other families and a guide. Young girl told the story and she falls in love and marries guide. Her aunt who is very stern at end changes her hair ribbons to blue to show that she is married. Crossing the River is a large part of the story. One family loses a baby to the River. One family the parents die and leave behind a little boy who the girl is close to. She, the guide and the boy become a family in the end.

The Far-off Land by Rebecca Caudill? They put colored ribbons in bodices to show marital status. Married women wore blue instead of pink. They were Moravians.
