An old Science Fiction short story, that I was reminded of by news of Amazon setting up a 'podcast' using chatbots, not people.

In this future, goods are delivered by matter transmission. A bitter old lady makes her orders via a telephone. She torments and gaslights the young woman who takes her orders by maintaining she isn't human - just a robot.

The young lady finally snaps. The sadist knows this when her victim is driven to deliver her blood through the apparatus, to prove her humanity.

It's old. It's obscure. Then again, so am I. Thanks in advance for any suggestions - and the anthology I many have read it in.

This is "Answering Service" by Fritz Leiber. Took me forever to track down, because I was sure it was by Robert Bloch. It hasn't been collected too often. The story has its own page on LT right here: https://www.librarything.com/work/3362960/t/Answering-Service-%5Bshort-story%5D

The places that page lists has it being included in seems to cover all of the English printings per ISFDB, so you should be able to figure out which one it is.

Thank you so much :-)

I actually found the story on one of my bookshelves in the very anthology that is given in your link. It cost me 10p in a second-hand bookshop, so you imagine how long ago that was.

I will not forget again.
