We know there are older library catalogs. The earliest Vatican catalog is from 1475, for instance. But it's hard to get access to that one.... And you can't read a lost catalog. Think of what a catalog of the Library of Alexandria would be like....

Hand-written, on papyrus? It might be cheaper to hire a goon to just go bring back the book. :-)
