Searching a Specific Book

I am looking for a book. I grew up with it as a child. It is about a child immigrant in America, he loses his family in a riverboat accident in either the ohio river or the missisipi river. he has a series of adventures in the book and is eventually reunited with his cousin at the end, who survived the riverboat accident and has been living in the woods ever since. He believes in brownies, creatures of scotch-irish folklore.

it was a chapter book. decently thick but not enourmous. it had a dark cover with a full bleed illustration on it.
