I have wanted to make a new thread for a long time and pondered what I wished it to look like. Now I finally made a decision and took the time to create the thread. I was greatly inspired by Lisa and Dilara. Thank you both!

One reason for wanting a new thread was that I had changed the rules so many times that my old thread was full of old reviews of books that now I do not count anymore. Being a member of LT has really changed my view on reading about other countries and now I primarily read own voices books. I wish to broaden this and to further diversify my reading.

This group is wonderful because there is no pressure and we all just follow our challenges and fill our threads in our own timelines and with our own rules. I definitely want to concentrate more on this challenge in the future.

My rules

I read books (fiction, nonfiction or poetry) set or at least firmly rooted in the country and by an author from that country (by birth, nationality or family). I don't list each and every book, especially when it comes to places like Germany, the UK or the US, but only those that feel representative and really show something about the country or have something to say about its culture.

The only exception when it comes to native authors are Antarctica and Vatican since they do not have native populations. I will still only include authors who have spent a significant amount of time there or who at least have substantial knowledge about these places.

If I read more books by the same author, I list them behind the author's name, but I do not count them.
The challenge is completed for a specific country when I have read five books by different authors for that country, but I add more books when I read more.

This is the first time I am doing a challenge where books are counted that I have already read, so I decided to start from November 2006 - this was the most significant month in my life until I met my husband: I traveled to Australia for the very first time, and it was also my first trip on my own and my first ever trip on a plane. It changed my life!
When I came back in 2007, I became seriously interested in other countries for the first time and the same year I started uni and began to read literature apart from genre fiction. So I think using November 2006 as a starting point really fits.

The list

I am using a combination of several lists, but the inclusion or exclusion of a specific country or entity should not be taken as a political comment.

I decided to subdivide some countries, and thinking about that has shown me even more how wonderful and diverse the world is, because it was hard to know where to stop. For example, there are smaller countries which still have distinct culturally diverse regions, such as Spain or Belgium, and large countries that should definitely be subdivided if I am taking the effort to subdivide countries like the US, Canada and Australia. However, one has to stop somewhere or the thread becomes impractical, and on top of that, I simply do not know enough about many countries to make a decision.

Subdivided countries are counted as completed on the map at the top of the thread when I have read five books for them, but in their post in the thread they only count as completed when I have read five books for each subdivision.

Notes

- I severely cropped the picture of the Australia and Oceania map since most countries could not be seen anyway and it just looked like a blank white space.

- I might include subdivisions of Russia when I read specific books for them, but I feel too undecided and overwhelmed about that now because I am not knowledgeable enough about the country.

- I wished to subdivide the US, but subdividing it into 50 states was too much, so I looked for a way to subdivide it into bigger regions. I found a list and map of "Census Regions and Divisions of the United States", which provided exactly what I was looking for. I decided to further separate Alaska and Hawai'i because of their unique locations.

151Jackie_K
May 25, 4:09 pm

I like the new setup very much! I'm keeping my thread a bit looser - preferring 'own voices', but reading travelers' accounts, or books set in countries other than the author's own, if relevant. Although probably a lot of that is due to the fact that I couldn't face the work that this obviously took! :)

152labfs39
May 25, 8:05 pm

Two things I like about your lists and may emulate are your sections for books about the region as a whole or about more than one country in that region (particularly helpful for nonfiction) and your identification of countries you have visited.

153Dilara86
May 26, 1:06 am

>148 MissBrangwen: Glad I inspired you. Subdivisions make sense :-) Posts for whole regions/continents also make sense, and I wish I'd thought of it before setting up my new thread alphabetically, but it's too late now - I am not starting over again :-D

154MissBrangwen
May 26, 1:48 pm

>151 Jackie_K: That is what I like so much about this challenge - it gives us the freedom to create our threads and challenges as we prefer.

>152 labfs39: The sections about regions as a whole were quite a spontaneous idea because I realized that otherwise it would be hard to place some of the books. I was thinking of nonfiction, too.

>153 Dilara86: No, it's so much work that you cannot easily start over! And the alphabetical order has its merits, too. I think the subdivisions make the thread look so tidy because it breaks up some of the long lists of books.
