Please help me remember the title and author of a novel/story collection:

* Interconnected stories about people living in an apartment building in a large city, possibly New York
* One story involves a male teacher who either used to box or boxes privately. A much younger female student insists they should marry. He meets her parents, who support the relationship despite the age gap. At one point, he asks the student to punch him.
* Jewelry or charms appear throughout the stories and seem symbolically important. I specifically remember a dolphin charm.
* One man in the apartment building spends a lot of time in the Otis elevator.
* One character may actually be the devil, or implied to be evil as recognized by a priest.
* I think the book was published or popular around 2005.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

>1 EmGrrrr: I haven't read it, but it looks like a 2001 book by David Schickler has stories about people living in a NYC apartment building called The Preemption: Kissing in Manhattan
