I'm trying to identify a children's/juvenile racing novel or series that I read from a school library in the 1990s, though I believe it was probably published in the 1970s or 1980s.
What I remember with fairly high confidence:
* The books were relatively short (probably under 150 pages, possibly under 100).
* The main character was involved with racing and mechanics/building vehicles.
* The character may have been an adult, though I'm not completely certain.
* One book involved a competition between two prototype dune buggies or off-road racing vehicles.
* The race took place in a desert or dune environment.
* One design was considered superior because of its engine/power, while the other was considered superior because of its chassis, body, or handling.
* At the end of the story, instead of choosing one winner outright, the decision was made to combine the best features of both designs into a final vehicle.
Things I'm less certain about:
* I believe the main character was called "Wheels" and may have been referred to as "Wheels White" (or a very similar name), but the surname could be wrong after 30+ years.
* It may have been a series featuring the same protagonist across multiple books.
This was a school-library book in the United States. The engineering/design competition aspect of the dune buggy story is the detail I remember most clearly.
Sorry, I know this a very random and the details are sketchy. But I remember liking this book (possibly series?) as a kid and wondered if anyone else remembered it.
