Found: Portal Fantasy series adult late 90s

Might have also been early 2000s. I got it out of our tiny public library in the late 90s/early 2000s. It was a series and for a long time our library only had books 1 and 2; book 3 was acquired shortly before I went to college and wasn't the end of the series.

This was my first queer characters in the wild book. What I remember of the story is two people from our world, one male one female, end up in a fantasy world. There's a secret society of knights I think? They come back to our world at the end of book 1 and go back to the fantasy world in book 2. The woman might have a prophecy about her? I think the woman might have been a medical examiner? I remember something spooky happening with her in a hospital-like space at the start of book 2. The man from our world and a knight from the fantasy world have a romantic thing?

I'd like to reread and see if the books are any good and maybe finally finish the series decades later, if I can find it!

Maybe the Last Rune series by Mark Anthony?
