YA fiction book about a boy (approximately aged 11, described as having a gloomy demeanor and NOT a fan of reading) at a lake house formerly owned by a scholar/author/librarian for the summer with his divorced mother. He is bullied by peers and befriends another girl his age who lives in a very odd house nearby while they explore his own book-filled rental. As he reads each book, he begins to hear each scene play out from the island in the lake, and eventually canoes out to investigate. The ending involves a battle scene with several fictional characters and the MC working together/making up with his bullies. Cover is mainly blue, with a silhouette of a child in a canoe and the island in the background. I read this around 2021 in New England :)
