Author Lin Carter was a USA citizen born in Florida, and on my Countries Graphs and Charts, he is listed under Florida, USA as a country that maps to United States of America. I have other Floridian authors who are correctly assigned directly to USA, and Lin joins them as grouped under Florida when I check the new(ish) US states page.

Is this because "Map Location" is set to Florida, USA? (I'm not fully clear on the nuances of the new version of that field.)
3Bookwomble
>2 keristars: No, the intention of that field is to allow greater resolution of the geographical locations of authors, and will hopefully be rolled out to other global regions in due course. The algorithm is supposed to still assign the appropriate country, as it does, for example, with Thomas Burnett Swann, another Floridian.
Edited, as I misremembered the state location of the author I initially gave as an example! 🤦♂️

Ah, gotcha. That the other author has (as far as i can tell!) the exact same data in the field but gets listed properly is very weird.

>4 keristars: Exactly, and, yes, it is weird! I've tried editing the field for Lin's record, but whenever I reset it to "Florida, USA" it does this again.

This may be because someone filled in the Map field with Florida,USA. Have you tried erasing the data in the map field to see if it fixes it?
7Bookwomble
>6 gilroy: The new Map field is designed to allow LT to display hierarchical geographic data, so the system should show Lin as resident in the USA at country level, and of Florida at the state level. Other authors with the same combination of data, such as Thomas Burnett Swann, are graphing correctly.

>7 Bookwomble: Ah, spotted the problem -- The non-English CK is probably creating an issue. It usually does in the search.

There is always the question of whether spmebody who was born in Florida and spent his chilhood there, but lived in New York and New Jersey in adulthood should really be listed as Florida at all.

>8 gilroy: I'd considered that, and the Norwegian CK entries for Carter hasn't included any geographical data, it was just showing what has been entered in the English version. I did save Nationality and Map Location to locate it to Norwegian to see if it made a difference, which it didn't. Other authors also have non-English CK and don't have this issue.

>9 MarthaJeanne: Yes, it's a matter of judgement as discussed in the topic, and one that hopefully doesn't result in "edit wars".
Spike Milligan is a case in point. He's (correctly) listed as Irish, while being born in India and spending the majority of his life in England, where, as an adult, an ungrateful government refused to confirm his citizenship based on his British mother's statehood and that he served in the British Army through WWII. He was then granted Irish citizenship by that country based on his father's nationality. So he's Irish, despite never having lived there.
Carter lived his childhood and early adulthood in Florida, and I'm not aware that he eschewed being a Floridian, so signing him to that state for the purpose of the Map field seems legitimate.

I'm seeing Thomas Burnett Swann in the Florida, USA category on your page. This is happening because "Florida, USA" is for some reason listed as a variant of USA. I don't know why it was aded in there, but a couple others like "Hawaii" and "Chicago, Illinois, USA" will do the same thing because they're listed as variants of the USA, so they get separated out.

>12 knerd.knitter: Yes, I see him there now, when he wasn't before!
I think it's because I confirmed the Map field on his CK, which now shows in black type rather than green, which indicates it has field content calculated by LT.
I also have Walter M. Miller Jr. on my shelf, whose mapping to country and state are correct as his Florida status in the Map field is still LT calculated (green type). I'll let LT calculate for Swann again, which should shift him back to his rightful place 😊

>12 knerd.knitter: Yeah, that did fix Swann, so now it just needs some nice LT staffer to fix the coding 😁
