I know, the illustrations are the reason for a picture book. But this poster lists his five favorite first lines:

>2 merrystar: See! There you go!

Most introductory lines I’m seeing are very plain. They don’t really grab at you.

Some can be guessed by their content:

“The Lupine Lady lives in a small house overlooking the sea.”

“The place is Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey. The year is 1999.”

>4 2wonderY: That looks very cool! I know the author but not the book. Also hooray for the Miss Rumphius! I liked her a lot better than my kids.

It's weird to try to think of first lines of picture books -- my brain keeps supplying random chapter book first lines. But, another good one would be:

"One-berry, Two-berry, pick me a blueberry." (Jamberry)

The older the better, I’m noticing.

“Tom Potts was fooling with a gun
(Such follies should not be),
When - bang! the pesky thing went off
Most unexpectedly!”

“Once upon a time there was a beautiful young duck named Ping.”

I don’t remember ever having read this. I must have just grabbed it at a sale because it’s a classic. It is charming.
