A few months ago, I added a Calico cat to my house. I marvel at the colors in her fur, and the fact that it seems God took a paint brush and designed beautiful spots of cinnamon, black, and white colors. Bella is very affectionate, intelligent, and quite a dare devil.
Most recently, she gave me quite a scare when I couldn't find her, and looked upward to the loft. I found her acrobatically walking along the top of the wooden slat. Rather than yell, I quickly, but quietly walked upstairs. I was able to grab her as she was perched in shape to take one giant leap downward.
It is wonderful to have an affectionate cat to plant herself next to me, or on my lap while I am reading, but I pray the drama subsides.

BOOK #17 READ IN JUNE 2026

Night Road by Kristin Hannah
A friend read most of the books written by Kristin Hannah. I agree with her regarding the excellent character development. Some of her books tend to be dramatic, but not overly so.
Night Road is a story of three teens who made a terrible mistake when drinking too much at their graduation party. Three were drunk, one died, all others, including parents were impacted by the death of one of the Farrady twins, Lexi Baill, the driver of the car in the terrible accident on Night Road, paid the high price of going to jail. Both twins were her wonderful friends, Mia, paid with her life, her twin brother was left to pick up the pieces of horrible, sheer grief. His mother will not forgive Lexi. And, Zach suffers the loss of his sister, and very close friend, Lexi.
This is a story of how one night, one mistake, can cause a life-long grief of "What ii?"
Kristin Hannah has the excellent skill of character development as she places each one impacted in a dramatic, terrible spin.

Such a pretty kitty! I'm so happy to see a picture of Bella. Her face is so expressive, and sometimes the markings on a calico can hide that. She is delightful!

>3 m.belljackson: Hello Marianne. I haven't found any of Kristen Hannah's books that I don't like. My friend, who read all of her books to date, recommended Firefly Lane. There was a movie of this one. I think it was on Hulu, but I'm not sure. It was quite entertaining and followed the book for the most part. She is a good writer. Right now I have a lot of books out from the library. After I'm finished with them, I hope to read one from my collection.
All good wishes Do you like her writing?
>4 jessibud2: Hi Shelley, Thanks for stopping by. I remember seeing the photo of your Calico. Your cat is so very pretty as well. I never tire of observing Bella. She is fascinating. She has a temper and when she doesn't want to be picked up, she lets me know. She eats quite a bit throughout the day and night. If the food doesn't have gravy in it she won't eat it until she sees that I'm not going to give her gravy as often as she would like it. Then, she will walk away, tail in the air.
She is much more affectionate than any other cat I've owned. We will have to share stories about the love of a Calico cat!
>5 fuzzi: Fuzzi, How interesting that three of us have Calico's! I've always been a dog lover, but I am fast becoming a rapid admiration of cat behavior. >6 fuzzi: And, congratulations on finding so many of Brian Lies bat books. I laughed right out loud when reading each of them.
>6 fuzzi: Fuzzi, I'm glad you found some of the Bat Books. There are many of them.

>16 m.belljackson: Marianne, Kristin Hannah is an author who writes with a good development of characters. I think I only read two or three of her books. But, I own quite a lot of them. I'll be interested in knowing what you think of her writing style.
>17 fuzzi: Fuzzi, Your calico seems more symetrical than mine. Debbie is very pretty. She also has a lot of white on the front of neck area. I very much like that her face has black on one side, and the pretty orange/cinamman color on the other side.
Bella is very intelligent, and exceedingly affectionate. Almost always, if she sees me reading, she hops on the chair, and plops either on my side or at the bottom of my feet.

>18 tymfos: Terri, I remember your cat was quite a jumper/climber when she first arrived in your house. That is also a trait that Bella developed. I always try to understand how she got to where she landed. The height is usually very high. Last week, she jumped to the very top of a high cabinet that has glass shelves and doors. She was very comfortable looking down at us.

BOOK #THREE READ IN THE MONTH OF JULY 2026

Where Wonder Grows by Xelena Gonzalez with illustrations of Adriana M. Garcia
Grandma teaches her granddaughters the power of magical rocks, seashells, crystals and meteorites. Her garden contains all these magical items that hold incredible healing power. By gathering the magic rocks and relics from nature, they learn the wisdom of the rocks holding molten heat bubbling from the earth's belly as it once burnt the new rocks into being!
These rocks were around longer than humankind and hold more knowledge than we will ever know. Following the ancient practice of her ancestors, grandma goes into the sweat lodge, where meditation, singing and prayers occurred, bringing strength.
Some of the rocks contain healing powers as grandmother shows her children the color of the crystals that are purple, blue and quartz of many kinds.
These are the children who will pass the knowledge on to their grandchildren.

BELLA IS BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!! Before we were taking many cat pictures, we adopted "Patches", whom I renamed "Miss Marble", after her family moved without her. She was lovely and marched right into our house when we opened the door to lure her in. I loved her gorgeous green eyes.
Many years to you and Bella together!!!!!
BTW, we call what fuzzi's Debbie is doing "knuckling" or "sitting puck-a-duck.")

ILLUSTRATED BOOK #FOUR READ IN JULY 2026

Remembering
Written by Xelena Gonzalez beautiful illustrations of Adriana M. Garcia
As a family begins the customs of Dia de los Angelitos, they deeply remember their beloved dog who is gone from this world, but is in the next. While they miss their beloved animal, they find ways to celebrate the life and special experiences shared together.
The favorite meal is set in the place it was served, all special toys the dog treasured, as well as beautiful flowers are used as a remembrance, the young girl who held a special place in the heart of the dog, whistles the notes she used to call for a walk, and in the wind, she remembers and hears her loving dog's response.
Remembering that her dog was a constant companion, she walks their space and brings tokens of what they found on their journey.
The family lights candles and makes a path of leaves to guide the way home. They celebrate in thanks for the many ways in which love was reciprocated.
This is yet another illustrated book that provides knowledge of something previously unknown. And, as I read, I too remember the very special animals that graced my life from a young child to now, as an older adult.
Animals have blessed me throughout my life. Each one had special traits, everyone of them had hearts overflowing with love. And, when their journey was done, the grief felt was intensely felt with the remembrance of our journeys together.
Always thankful of the love shared, the memories remain as the heart remembers and in this way, the gifts of love remain.
InformationRegarding Dia de los Muertos:
The tradition of Dia de los Muertos has an immense history that goes as far back as 1800 B.C. In Pre-Hispanic times. This centuries-old holiday was celebrated at the beginning of summer. When the Spanish arrived, the festival was aligned with the Catholic holidays of All Souls’ Day and All Saints Day.
Today, Dia de los Muertos has evolved into various forms. In urban settings, the holiday gives emphasis on its social importance; in rural areas, the religious traditions are more pronounced. But regardless of the aspects the Guatemalans focus on, the essence of the tradition has remained the same for millennia: to celebrate the second life of the dead.

Again, today Bella jumped on top of the table/work station in the kitchen, scattering papers throughout; my system of paying bills had to begin all over again.
In addition, she jumped from the floor up to the space between the oven and sink. I was drying seeds from my cone flowers. I spent a lot of time over the last few days in the process of deadheading the top of the cones where the flowers that once bloomed were to snap off, then the long process of pulling apart and spreading the seeds on paper towels to dry before placing them in dry containers to use next year.
Bella jumped from the floor to the kitchen counters, as I watched hundreds of dried seeds fell to the floor.
She has no fear of heights. I moved all chairs and other objects she used as a springboard to get to the top of the board holding the newels in place. Now she sits on the floor and tries to squeeze her body between the spaces.
The above image reminds me of her antics.

BOOK #FIVE READ IN THE MONTH OF JULY 2026

Jennifer Grant Consider the Lilies with beautiful illustrations of Julianna Swaney
Incredibly illustrated, beautifully told, this is a book to stay on the shelf with my favorite illustrated books. As the author begins a journey of the lush world of flowers, she then identifies each flower and the lush colors that draw the bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, Gold finch bird, tiny ladybug insects, and the black swallowtail butterflies that are all drawn to the beautiful flowers.
Describing the colors and traits of the flowers, the author demonstrates both the beauty of nature, the gift of each, she then writes of the biblical note to
"Consider the lilies of the field." Noting that "God made each special and they live and grow jus where they are supposed to be"
And, she ends with the message that "it is the same with you and me."

BOOK NUMBER SIX READ IN JULY 2026

This is a humorous book of a little boy with a creative imagination who wants to plant sunflowers on the moon. Looking high in the sky at the full moon, he thinks he might have the solution for reaching that destination by getting all the unused hoses in the neighborhood and placing them together, and finding two thousand used truck inner tubes. Then, he will of course, use his bike as transportation. But he also need to find a hill with two tall, fat birch trees.
Tying the inner tube ends making a rubber band to the fat birch trees. Opps, he also needs a tractor to streeetch the rubber band for a mile down the big hill and tie this to a huge oak tree. Whalla, you make a great big slingshot. A 25 foot long pole is perfect to act like the shoot that will fling and fit into the surface of the moon.
Now, take all the hoses collected and make a big, huge spool --- find the big wooden spool first.
Calculate that the moon is about 238,900 miles from the earth to the moon, and now take the end of the flagpole and aim it at the moon. Cutting the inner tubes loose, you can now send the pole to the moon where it will find ground to allow the pole to hold.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My Comments:
To find the rest of the instructions, should you be interested in trying this feat, you should purchase the book and read the remaining instructions, and also to see if the boy was successful in this most important pre-NASA experiment.
I've copied most of the directions, but now you will need to learn the rest. But, do not forget a space suit as well.
Follow the directions in this plan of 24 easy steps. Remember to communicate with the 75 challenge group to tell them if you could indeed plant sunflowers on the moon.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Seriously, this is a funny, wonderfully creative book. I recently discovered the illustrated books of Mordicai Gerstein, and he is quite intelligent and humorous. I will read as many of his books as I can find.
I give it five happy stars.

BOOK #FOUR READ IN JULY 2026

The First Drawing by Mordicai Gerstein
Used as a spring board for this illustrated book, is the fact that approximately 300 thousand years ago, a young boy's footprint was discovered on a cave wall in the south of France. Allow your mind to go back to caveman time when all groups slept together in caves, killed their meals, and lived a short, productive life.
Now, image you are a young boy who dreams of misc. shapes of animals while wondering how to make the images tangible, and not just in his mind.somewhere other than in your thoughts. A young boy sees shapes where ever he goes. No one appreciates your mind, thoughts or any artistry and they made fun of for wasting time.
Imagine the boy sees these images on the wall of the cave where is family sleep each night. In this way the first drawings were made. The author/illustrator Mordicai Gerstein renders images regarding how the cave drawings look to one small boy who carried all these daily images that he witnesses in his brain, but has no satisfaction because he is misunderstood.
Finally, when he can stand no more of misunderstanding cave dwellers, he begins to take a stick and carve the animals and the way in which cave people killed in order to live. Then, his imagination came to life in these first drawings from a place in time we can only try to understand through his, the first drawings.
