Has anybody read this book by Souad?
I haven't started it yet but it came today from paperbackswap. It is the story of a young woman who had s3x before marriage, dishonoring her family. Her brother, assigned by the family to carry out the punishment, poured gasoline over her and started her on fire. This is her story.

I finally picked Burned Alive: a survivor of an honor killing speaks out by Souad up a couple of days ago and just finished reading it. This is a moving story and a great read to learn more about other cultures. The book was easy to get into as the author wrote of her experiences growing up in a Muslim home in a West Bank village. She tells of how devalued women were in her village that they are mercilessly beaten for the smallest infractions- forgetting salt in a recipe even. She tells of how her mother gave birth to 14 children-13 girls and one boy and how after the first 4 girls the rest were smothered immediately after they were born. The author falls in love with a young man and they want to marry but must wait until her older sister is married first. During the wait, the young couple is intimate and a pregnancy results, giving away their secret. The young man, in fear, runs away leaving Souad to deal with the repercussions. In her case it comes as she is doing laundry one morning and her brother in law douses her with gasoline and lights her on fire. The final half of the book deals with her painful physical and emotional recovery after being rescued by an aid worker and taken out of the country. Souad speaks out today to make the plight of women in some areas known to the international community in hopes that changes will be made.

Have you read In the Name of Honour by Mukhtar Mai, a similarly horrific story but again a survivor's tale?
