I read a book as a teen (back in the 80's) about a group of teens locked up somewhere. They were kept in some sort of building with no food or necessities. As they gradually "accidentally" did certain things....like snap for instance....a door would open and they would be given food.
As time progressed the kids developed intricate dances or rituals trying to figure out what worked to get rewards.
I read this book as a kid and have been trying to figure out what it was for a couple of years now. The cover may have been dark blue/black and had staircases going all over with the kids pictured on them trying different rituals to get rewards.
Can anyone help me out? Thanks!
