Yes, the "Heavy Metal" group includes Hair Metal. I would prefer, however, that we greatly limit the Nu-metal / Mallcore / Hatecore stuff. I hate bandwagon jumpers who lack originality and passion. But, democracy rules, so we'll see.

Recent concerts I've seen include Napalm Death, Kreator, Slayer, Alice Cooper, & the Emissions fest in Youngstown. Celtic Frost will be in a few weeks!!!

My concert wishlist includes a reunited Accept, Opeth (just haven't been able to catch them), & Sodom.

Favorite groups include Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, Motorhead, Mindrot, Anacrusis, Sodom, Death, Samael, Metal Church, Fear of God, Witchcraft, Slayer, Bathory, and tons more. // Valedjad

Perhaps I can post something and get some more discussion going in this group. My main musical interest is classical music, but I also have a strong side interest in gothic/doom and progressive rock and metal.

I've never been to a rock concert, though. I'm generally anti-social by nature, especially regarding music listening. I prefer sitting in my room and listening with headphones.

Did someone say gothic doom metal? Practically synonymous with Type O Negative. Check them out if you already haven't peripatetic. Also some early Monster Magnet might do - it's very sludgy and trippy. More stoner metal than gothic doom metal, but you might like it.

Am a metalhead from way back. Not so much into the screaming/grunting stuff. I tried though since I love Pantera's music, but cannot stand Phil's voice. Except the Down project and I only picked that up because of Pepper Keenan.

Regularly listen to - Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Dio, Anthrax, Ministry, Monster Magnet, Type O, Disturbed, COC, Cathedral, Candlemass, early Marilyn Manson, Drowning Pool, Motorhead, Rob/White Zombie, early Metallica, Down and a smattering of others including some hard rock and punk. People think I'm nuts, but I know what I like.

Type O Negative: like what I've heard, but haven't sought out more (yet)--thanks for the pointer/reminder.

Vinnie Vincent Invasion, Metal Church, Anthrax, Exodus, Overkill, WASP, Judas Priest, Queensryche, Helloween, Fastway, Helix, Dangerous Toys,
Quiet Riot - (Conditional Critical album),
RATT, Megadeth, Metallica (80s-Black album),
Scorpions,

- & others. I've been to lots of concerts, all different types, seen a lot of the 'hair bands' (I dislike that term, by the way) in the past.

Anyone like the Cro-Mags?

I always look around for more bands to check out, so I welcome your suggestions.

Hi

Just joined the group. Can I be a bit forward and recommend my own book? It's called Extreme Metal: Music and Culture on the Edge published last year by Berg. It's a sociological treatment of extreme metal. It's had positive reviews in terrorizer and Decibel magazines.

Hey KKHarris (kind of like a combination of Priest & Maiden). That looks interesting and it's funny because I've been sort of randomly looking for some books about the metal genre lately. Not so much the extreme sub-genre, but something more overall. I'm not into Necrobutcher & those kind of guys and their bands, but more mainstream metal as you can tell from my post above. Any recommendations in that respect? It's hard to tell from Amazon sometimes...

In terms of more mainstream metal, the key texts are Robert Walser's 'Running with the devil' and Deena Weinstein's 'Heavy metal; a cultural sociology'. Both are recommended.

Boris anyone? Sunn0))? Do these guys count?

Here's my more straightahead faves (with some hardcore and other loud music thrown in):

Sabbath (Dio era is underrated), Napalm Death, Sigh, Agnostic Front, Entombed, Bolt Thrower, Godflesh, Van Halen (1st Album), The Priest, AC/DC, Exodus, Isis, Cephalic Carnage, Cannibal Corpse, Celtic Frost, Emperor, Ulver, KISS, Witch, Big Business (are we counting them?), Growing (ditto), Pelican, OM, Fucking Champs, AC, Bleach (the japanese all girl band), High on Fire, Lamb of God, yer Slayer, Dimmu, Motorhead, Death Angel-Anthrax-Megadeth-Mettalica, Deep Purple, Earth, Meshuggah, Chrome Division (guilty pleasure),Minor Threat, Black Flag, Bad Brains, DK, Aggression, Circle Jerks, Mastodon, Discharge, Hawkwind (!), Opeth, Mayhem, Ministry (?), Melvins, Naked City/Prelapse/Painkiller/Praxis, Lightning Bolt (?), FLying Luttenbachers, The Locust, Total Shutdown, Comets on Fire, Dead Meadows, various Krautrock, BOC, CoC, Zepp, Sepultura, Flattbush

A couple sillier metal-related books I've read recently
are Lords of Chaos, Bang Your Head: The Rise and Fall of Heavy Metal (a book that prematurely named Metal mostly dead), and Hell Bent for Leather: Confessions of a Heavy Metal, a pretty funny memoir of a British wannabes struggle to make it as a professional headbanger.

I can see why you'd categorise the latter two titles as light-hearted, gregtmills, but personally I thought Lord of Chaos (2nd edn.) was a pretty solid work.

Many works about metal tend to be too descriptive and not analytical enough for my taste. To that end, I have started a LibraryThing group entitled 'black metal and philosophy' which I would encourage readers of this list to contribute to if they are inclined so to do.

I'll post more about why this is the case there.
