I finally took a picture of my TBR pile. I knew it was past time to figure out a new way to shelf all my books since my shelves are over full. I decided while I was moving most of my books around, I might as well do this first since I was curious how high the pile would reach. As it turns out, I couldn't stack them to the ceiling because the ceiling wasn't high enough, so I stacked them in two rows. Here is my TBR pile: 119 books

Unfortunately, my TBR pile literally attacked me when I removed a pile of the very top books on one side...Half of the pile fell on me!

I understand if no one wants to post photos of their TBR piles. I thought this was simply something fun to do. Also, I was curious.

HOLY COW!!! That's really cool (and a bit scary...) Hope you weren't injured to badly!

My TBR list is mostly virtual as the books I tag "TBR" are generally the titles I look for on my library trips.

LOL! I'm sorry for laughing, I'm just picturing Kerian buried under a pile of books as the kittens play on top of the pile and various family members walk by her door shaking their heads and muttering, "That girl. Always with her nose in a book." :o)

Wow K. I am not sure I want to know about my TBR but maybe . . . if I get to unpacking my books this weekend I will try and make a stack to make you feel better or at least in good company.

I am sometimes afraid my books might crash through to the apartment below. Hmm. I hope you are not seriously injured.

Thanks! It was mainly one of my hands that got hurt, but it was fine after a few minutes. :)
I've heard of different ways of having a TBR pile. Yours sounds safer. ;)

#3 JP:
KIK! I'm still laughing. None of the cats dared to go back in the kitchen after that. They were too scared.

#4 Mar:
Can't wait to see it if you can stack some. Just make sure you stack them when no one's around to tell you "no more books!" ;)
My worry is of some of our bookshelves falling forward away from the walls. Thank you, I'm fine. :)

As most of you know, the majority of my pile is still residing in boxes. When I move in a couple of months, I'll try to remember to make a pile and take a pic!

Kerian - I love looking at book piles and yours are very nice :-)

It took me over an hour to put away my books this morning after my own ill-fated attempts at getting a piccy for the book pile contest. According to my tags I have 230+ books to be read and I can't imagine pulling them all out and putting them all away twice in one day LOL

Maybe on my next vacation....

I'm sorry your books are all in boxes. Soon enough they will be free of them. I can't wait to see your TBR pile or bookshelves. :)

#7 Jenson:
Thank you! Wow, that's a lot of TBR books! Heehee, it would take vacation time, wouldn't it? ;) Good luck in the book pile contest! :)

9Jenson_AKA_DL
Aug 8, 2008, 5:06 pm

Kerian - Actually, I didn't get a good enough picture to go in the contest. First I covered my circular staircase in books and took pictures from the top. Unfortunately either my kids were in the way or there was too much junk in the picture. By the time I got everything cleared out my cat tried to run up the stairs and knocked the bottom four stairs down! Then my son had the idea of burying me in my books, which is why it took so long for me to put everything away afterward. A good idea, but I hate pictures of myself and can't bear to put them up for the contest :(

#9: What if you just made a pile of books over yourself and either angle it so only your feet can be seen sticking out, or just make the pile with your shoes coming out of the bottom, ala the Wicked Witch of the East?

My actual pile is pretty small, though I have lots of TBRs -- I just generally keep a list, intending to check them out of the library. Right now I have the following in my stack:

Babylonne
Peeps
Dedication
The London Eye Mystery
Nobody's Princess

Edited: Oct 19, 2008, 2:15 pm

I have a bigger TBR pile than Foggi? Weird. I would love to share a picture, but I really don't feel like taking the time to arrange the books, take the photo, remember what my Flickr account is, upload the photo, and link it. So you'll just have to deal with a bulleted list.

  • The Invention of Hugo Cabret
  • The Looking Glass Wars
  • The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
  • Hatching Magic
  • Coraline
  • Bloody Jack
  • Raven Rise
  • Larklight
  • Pagan's Crusade
  • Undine
  • Mister Monday
  • The Floating Island

  • The Shape-Changer's Wife by Sharon Shinn
  • Preludes & Nocturnes
  • Wicked (Ugh. Couldn't do it.)
  • The Hound of Rowan

Lets see how many of those touchstone.

ETA: Instead of updating with a new post every time I finish/add a book, I'm just going to edit title into the list and strike the ones I've finished.

#5: K, the threat of "no more books!" is exactly why I do not now, and probably never will, have a traceable TBR pile - Mare's already pulled out the "but how many of these do you still need to read???" when I run across something new on here to add to my wishlist :)

Thankfully, BookMooch and PBS have the added benefit of getting rid of books I won't read or have already, which she's all in favor of - she's a reader too, but sometimes you wouldn't know it! So... Practical. *shudder*

    ;)

    #15 laia:
I would say that's a very good reason to keep your TBR pile a mystery. When my sisters saw how many books I have in my TBR pile, they said I can't buy any more books. (As though I have to listen! ;) I agree, BM and PBS are great for that! How do you the two of you feel about rereads?

I was bored today, so rather than read my TBR, I decided to put it all on one bookcase and take a picture of it!

That's about 120 books. I acquired the nice black set of classics on the bottom shelves only a few months ago, and another 20 or so at a recent library sale, but many of these books have been TBR for years!

    23compskibook

    Aug 21, 2008, 10:48 pm

So I'm desperately behind on my reading now that I'm doing alterations, teaching, coaching cross country, and doing barn chores. I don't have a picture of the pile, but on my immediate TBR list are the following:

Eclipse (which is next to be started)
Breaking Dawn (obviously after finishing Eclipse)
    Victory of Eagles
    Keturah and Lord Death
    Birdwing
A Curse as Dark as Gold
    The Hiding Place
30 Days to Understanding the Bible (mosty about the geography, how it all fits into modern stuff, which books are the same story as which others from a different perspective, chronology, etc)

I always have loads of books in mind to read next, but I don't usually have this many that I intend to start more or less right now. It doesn't help that I'm already reading 9 other books. I miss summer!!

    27lefty33

    #3 Lol

I have a lot of TBR books, although not as many as Kerian (thankfully). I didn't count them all, but I did count one shelf. It had 20 TBR books. I also have a big TBRR pile.

    29kgriffith
    Aug 26, 2008, 1:15 am

ok, I had to do a preliminary count just to see. My TBR pile stands at about 105 currently owned books, with at least 20 or so TBRs that I don't yet own, plus about 15 that are on their way via swapping sites. Yikes!!!

    30ChelseaB-ley
    Edited: Aug 26, 2008, 1:48 am

#29 Whoa. That's a lot. I'm guessing I have 20...40.....50......70........close to 80 books in my TBR pile. Hmmm...I didn't think I had that many but now that I look at my shelves...Dang! I could have more.

I don't count the books I don't have though. Since I don't own them, then I can't put them in a pile (haha). Those are more like TBB (To Be Bought).

    ETA: 30, again!
ETAA: LT's eating my words! I'm trying to put close but it disappeared and now all it shows is the c and then some periods after it. Bad LT!

Most of my tbr books are tagged that way in my library; however, I've been adding lots of books recently that I have not tagged yet, plus I wanted to add a reread to my tbr pile. Since I'm in school, this mounting list will have to wait until Christmas vacation and next summer (ugg). Here it goes:

Lord of the Rings (a reread, which I was planning on doing before I read the group discussion thread)
    other J.R.R. Tolkien materials
    Catch 22
    Charlie Bone and the Shadow
Michael Phelps' new book (arrives in Dec.)
    Harry, A History
    Tales of Beedle the Bard
Eat This, Not That for Kids
    Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer
    Shape of Mercy
    Barry Strauss' The Trojan War
    Ulysses Found
    The Alienist
    Ultimate Hard Bastards
    Atonement
    Atlas Shrugged
    Anthem
    and the list goes on...

*Snatches Resurrection Stone off of the floor where the last person dropped it.*

Time to resurrect this thread. How are your TBR piles people? Mine is in a constant state of flux, but here is what it's doing right now Note: These aren't in the order that I plan on reading them, just the order that I saw them and wrote them down. Maybe some day I'll be able to upload a picture, but the pile is small enough not to bother right now. Also it's full of Library books, which by their very nature have a short shelf life.

  • Seeing Redd
  • Speaker for the Dead
  • Furies of Calderon
  • Grave Peril
  • Night Watch
  • Dragon and Thief

Holdovers from the previous list are,

  • The Shape-Changer's Wife by Sharon Shinn
  • Preludes and Nocturnes
  • The Hound of Rowan

What's in your TBR pile now?

I have 38 books tagged "tbr" in my library; however, it feels like I have myriad of books that I should read/ would like to read/ should be tagged "tbr." My list includes:
    Alice in Wonderland
    Charlie Bone and the Shadow
    Tales of Beedle the Bard
    The Deathly Hallows Lectures
    The World According to Lucy
    Taken by Edward Bloor
    Black Magician Trilogy
and the list goes ever on...

It seems as though every time I log on to LT, I find at least 1 book to add to my tbr pile. I'm so ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays to get to the library and check out a bazillion books to lower my tbr pile ( although, by then I might find another bazillion books to keep adding to my tbr pile).

    #34 wingert:
Thanks! I've added a book to my wishlist from the books you've listed in your post. ;) The Deathly Hallows Lectures looks very interesting!

    #36 bib:
How do you manage only twenty books on your wishlist? Do you limit yourself until you've either bought some of them or have read other books you own? I'm impressed, btw! Also, congrats on being able to reach your TBR pile at last. I'm excited for you! :)

    #38 jp:
That's part of the reason why I stopped going to libraries. I always had the same problem. I usually ended up renewing my checked out books, sometimes for the limit of two renewals for some of the books. Funny enough, I would still not get some of them read by that time.

My TBR pile now has 133 books in it. I'm not sure for my wishlist since I have wishlists on different book sites. There are six books that are pending from my wishlist to TBR pile. Some books I own and want to read soon are:
    Brisingr
    Inkspell
    Manfield Park *
Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass (my copies are a two-in-one)
    Castle in the Air
    The Amulet of Samarkand

    4106nwingert
    Oct 20, 2008, 2:08 pm

    Kerian-
That book came from my Aamzon wishlist/ account, as something I would like since I ordered Tales of Beedle the Bard and Melissa Anelli's "Harry, a History." I also found a few other HP-related books on Amazon that are on my tbr pile: How Harry Cast his Spell by John Granger (I really like his analysis of HP), Making of Potterverse: a Month-by-Month look at Harry's First Ten Years by Scott Thomas, and Fandom of Magical Proportions: an Unauthorized History of the Harry Potter Fandom by Erin Pyne.

About the whole library issue: I'm glad I'm a library employee and don't accrue fines, otherwise I'd have about $30 in fines all the time.

    #41 wingert:
KIK, Harry, a History! I love the title. Regarding John Granger, I find his last name a little amusing. ;)

I paid all library fines last January. It was $12. I'm not sure how much it was when I was younger but I remember being severely punished by an ex-step father for having fines as a teenager. He had made me feel so awful that I felt sure every librarian knew I had had late fees just by looking at me which never failed to embarrass me. It took me eight years to ever step foot in a library again.

    43Espeon200
    Oct 20, 2008, 3:16 pm

Nonsense, Kerian. Librarians only know you have fines when you hand them your library card. This is why it is important to not let anyone else anywhere near your library card.

    44foggidawn
    Oct 20, 2008, 3:42 pm

Actually, most librarians don't mind if you have fines, as long as you're willing to pay them! After all, when people pay fines, it gives us more money to spend buying books for the library!

kirby's right, comp. Our librarians have suggested that to me. It may annoy the next person waiting for your book, but if you don't mind paying the fine, just keep it. Our library's book fine is five or ten cents a day, so I don't worry about handing it in late.

On the other hand, videos and DVD's are a dollar a day when they are late. I make sure I turn those in, watched or not.

I went to a used bookstore this weekend and found The Book of Lost Things sitting on a shelf. Not knowing what it was about, I picked it up to read the sleeves, decided to buy it, put the secret bookstore giftcard to my mother inside the book, and lost the book! This is the bit of good news: I had worried the envelope with the giftcard inside would slip out of the pages so I removed the card from the envelope and put it in my wallet. Luckily her giftcard is saved, but as to the book? It is among the lost things. MrA must have cursed all copies of the book. ;)

Kik, kirby. Give it a try and we shall see what happens, won't we? ;)

I'm having fun putting some of my TBR books into my 999 challenge for next year. I'm also BookMooching some of the titles for my "Epidemiology" category and BookMooched 7 out of 9 titles for my "Ghost Story" category.

My TBR short-list at the moment:

Happenstance Found (an advance reader copy that I need to review)
A Curse As Dark As Gold
    Magic's Child
    Into the Woods
    Cybele's Secret
    Pirate Emperor

This is the real struggle for me:
    Brisingr

A scary thought...A part of me wants to cut the book in two so I can carry half of it around with me to read now, and read the other half of it once I'm done with that. Books need to be portable! And yet, when it came to reading HP books 4-7 my first time around reading each (and even Breaking Dawn), they all went with me everywhere. Maybe I will read it when not chatting on Wednesday.

    ETA:
I just clicked some of those books, foggi. I didn't know you've read some books in Magic or Madness series. The first one in the series is in my TBR pile. I bought it in NY. :)

Is The Magic or Madness series any good? I've never even heard of them.

#75 -- I'd say that they're good but not great. They do tie in some cool mathematics concepts (and I'm not a math person at all, so when I appreciate a book's use of numbers, you know it has to be good). They're quick reads with a different take on magic than anything else I've read, so if what I've said so far sounds interesting, you might want to give the first book (Magic or Madness) a try.

Kerian - I always use a backpack when I'm out so I can carry those big books in my hands. Funny thing is - I'm probably steadier on my feet while I'm walking and reading, than I am when I'm just walking.

MrA: The curtains are just to make my closet seem like a seperate part of the room. And they hide my clothes.

Are those Harry Potter books I see in your TBR? Fun, good reading!

    Twilight, too?

And, from your flickr page, what is TBRA? As opposed to TBR?

    Nov 4, 2008, 10:00 am

    To be read aloud?
    To be read anon?
    To be read actively?
    To be read ASAP?

The last would then be TBRASAP. That's a lot of things standing for something.

I finally have an official count of books TBR that I don't own: 77. I haven't been brave enough to count the books I own that are TBR. That would probably make me feel guilty about buying new books at the library book sale this weekend. Can't have that!

Kirby, I am glad you mean TBRA! Harry Potter books...! ;)

Donna, I am probably the opposite. ;) Cars don't watch for predestrians much these days it seems so I probably sadly need my eyes off book pages where I live. The last street I cross before going to work is a busy mall street. I think a pedestrian will die there before they put in a side walk or cross walk. Otherwise....have you seen NY drivers? Good thing I am in CA. In NY they want to kill people on the roads, or something! ;)
    *ducks*
JP is an excellent driver, btw!

"In NY they want to kill people on the roads." It's true. This is why I hate walking around the city. Here in the suburbs I don't even feel safe on the sidewalks (when I can find one).

For some reasn, I feel like read lots of WWI/ Nazi-related books. Maybe it's becuase I saw the trailer for Valkyrie or becuase the latest episode of MuggleCast is discussing politics Potter-style, including WWII references.
Great! more books to add to my already overgrown tbr list!

I hate to let a good thread die... so... *resurrection stone*.

So, I got a package today that contained a number of books in a certain SciFi series that I need to read, and they've been added to the list. Meaning that I think this is as big as my TBR pile has gotten yet.

  • Science Fair
  • Xenocide
  • Children of the Mind
  • Ender's Shadow
  • Shadow of the Hegemon
  • Shadow Puppets
  • Shadow of the Giant
  • Book One of the Travelers
  • Hidden Empire
  • Heroes of the Valley
  • Bloodhound
  • Back to Protein
  • Skullduggery Pleasant

And I'm sure there are more, but that's what I have right now.

    TBR (35)

And there are two more boxes of books in the spare room, from the last two book fairs we went to. Yesterday we got an email reminding us when the next two book fairs are on. I'm almost afraid to go.

Well, this is disappointing. Last October I had 571 tbr, now I have 677.

    Drat.

And, I've done lots of reading since then!

#97 MrAndrew - I've already scheduled a vacation day for March 26th - the Friends of the Pittsboro Library Spring Book Sale. Eek.

Lol... I have a book sale coming up in April. They are going for a dollar a bag on the last day of it and I am afraid to go that day. Of course on the regular days the soft covers are only 50 cents and the hardcovers are only 1 dollar so either way I know my TBR pile is going to grow a significant amount!

    #98 karen:
You would not believe how disappointed I'd thought you must have been. You see, I misread your post as your TBR pile only being 57 books in October. :)

My TBR pile was 141 in mid to late October. It was 150 at the start of this new year and consists of 169 books now.

I have an "unread" tag in my catalog (117 books right now), but I don't think of that as my TBR list (or I might go mad!). For me, TBR is anything I have out from the library, as well as anything I particularly want to read soon. Right now, that includes a truly massive stack of library books, as well as most of the pile of ARCs that I picked up last month. I may list them (or even take a picture) when I have time.
