I know that the fascist Bush regime has presided over a reign of terror against its critics in the US for the last eight years. The new McCarthyism has effectively driven all dissent underground, and those who would protest the government's plans live in fear of the midnight knock on the door. How refreshing then to find a great nation which knows how to honor its dissidents. .

So is the point 'Could be worse, you could live in Russia'?

Jeez, Doug, do you have to start with the hyperbole again? America, by virtue of its freedom (what there is left anyway, you think you're joking) knows when its freedoms are being eroded. Are we just supposed to stand by and let that happen? I don't think so!
The difference here is that Russia has already fallen under the authoritative heel. The "dissidents" are attempting to change a thousand year history of one form of oppression or another. In the US, BushCo is trying to create a thousand year reign of authoritarian rule while our "dissidents" are trying to prevent this.
You really need to come into the light. You're too smart to be seen with the likes of BushCo and the neocons.

Speaking of which, has anyone read anything about the police raids in St. Paul?

#4: I have. I believe Glenn Greenwald was covering it in his column at Salon.com.
Of course, Doug's example couldn't be much poorer since the past week has seen the cops attack actual members of the media, like the ABC guy who was being strangled in Denver on tape and some other reports of identifiable members of the press being maced in St. Paul.
I guess you know you're free just because people in Russia are less free.
