I am a huge fan of David Foster Wallace's reportage, essays, and non-fiction writing. His interest kind of coincides iwth mine in terms of philosophy, mathematics, and in some ways, sports.

So, the big question is: should I take the plunge into reading his magnum opus: Infinite Jest. I have heard that is was challenging and difficult, and I have also heard that it was well worth the effort.

Any advice?

Why not? You can always put it back down. I'm definitely a bit more fond of his non-fiction work than the fiction, but mayhap starting out with the shorter pieces might give you an idea if you want to go further. I'd recommend Oblivion.

And if you'd prefer a novel to short stories but find that you don't have the stamina at the moment for Infinite Jest, I highly recommend The Broom of the System. It's one of my favorite novels. I've heard lots of folks describe it as "Infinite Jest-Lite." (I haven't read IJ yet. Probably next year--right now my big project is Proust.)
