Here are some recommendations:

Midwives by Chris Bohjalian

Most of Chris Bohjalian's book have a Vermont setting; as also true of Howard Frank Mosher and Mary McGarry Morris.

In the Fall by Jeffrey Lent is set in Vermont and Northern New Hampshire. It's historical fiction.

Saving the World by Julia Alvarez. Two story lines, one set in Vermont.

For mysteries, there is no author more representational of Vermont than Archer Mayor.

I'd recommend My Life and Adventures: A Novel by Castle Freeman. Funny, quirky, and with some beautiful descriptions of life in a Vermont small town.

Just read Wandering Home: A Long Walk... by Bill McKibben and really enjoyed it. It's a great review of his hike from his home in Vermont to his home in the Adirondacks (NY).

Amazingly, I come to this thread to post about a wonderful collection of short stories by Castle Freeman, Jr., and there he is in No. 3, from nearly six years ago. I was very impressed with Round Mountain, which I received through Concord Free Press. They have a wonderful free book distribution program that encourages readers to contribute to charitable causes, and to keep that ball rolling by passing the books on to others who will make a commitment to do so as well.
