I recently added The Heart is a Lonely Hunter to my library, and it caused me to wonder about other novels written by young adults mature and wise beyond their years. Any thoughts?

I'm not really aware of any YA authors who write for adults, but a couple that come to mind who write for their own age group are S. E. Hinton, Christopher Paolini, and Amelia Atwater-Rhodes.

I recently was surprised to learn that Mary Shelley was 19 when she wrote Frankenstein.

Françoise Sagan wrote Bonjour Tristesse at age 18. It has very big hit and she never wrote anything that successful again.
