I read a review of this book in The Catholic Worker, so that'll give you an idea of the tone (very serious). I can't remember if the Japanese man is in a group of tourists, or if he's by himself. He's in India, not as a sightseeing type of tourist, but almost like he's on a spiritual pilgrimage. Interwoven with the parts set in India are his memories from WWII, when he was a soldier (in Southeast Asia?). He's tormented by these memories. I seem to recall this book received honors/awards.
Thank you!

If your Japanese man was in Burma instead of India, I would guess the book you're looking for might be Harp of Burma by Michio Takeyama. It was made into an award winning film, but I don't know if the book itself won awards.
