I sold this book to a second hand bookstore by mistake.
What I remember was when you went through a door, you accessed another world on another planet. People very casually traveled from world to world. This whole system was controlled by a series of computers. At the end of the book, the computer network was destroyed, and so everyone was stuck in whatever world they were in when the computer was destroyed. This was not the central plot of the novel, but it was the general setting.
Thanks for any ideas.
