To be or not to be?

So, we all love reading about vampires, right? But hypothetically speaking, would you want to be one?

I can't believe this question hasn't already been asked, but I didn't see it anywhere in the group, so it certainly had to be asked.

Personally, it depends. If the "real" vampires were the soulless crawl-up-from-your-grave-every-night kind or the more tribal ARGH! kind, definitely not. Or if they absolutely had to kill other people to survive. But for most of the modern conceptions, yes. I wouldn't pass up the chance to experience something so different, and usually portrayed as something wonderful. Huge descriptions of the beauty of things seen with heightened senses and whatnot.

I can't believe this hasn't been asked either!

I would, yes, so long as it's not Dracula kind of vampires. But I'd be all for Anne Rice's, Stephenie Meyer's, Richelle Mead's Moroi, etc. In fact, I would love to. Heightened reflexes, sight, hearing, superior strength..no way would I turn it down, even if it did mean sucking a little blood once in a while. Ah, vampires, how I love thee.

Plus don't forget about the Immortality. The Immortality alone would be worth it to become a Vampire.

I just couldn't give up the sun.

Lestat went out into the Sun once with the intent of killing himself with the Sunrise however all he got out of it was a severe case of sunburn that he had to recover from. He had wanted to see what would happen if he had ventured outside in the Sun.

I think that is because he had drank the blood of the Ancient Ones. He had drank blood from Maharet. It's been awhile since I have read Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat. I had decided to start over from the beginning again because it has been so long since I have read them. I read them when they were originally Published and haven't read any of them since. Plus I never read past Memnoch the Devil even though I was still buying everyone of The Vampire Chronicles books that kept coming out. I can understand not wanting to give up the warmth of the Sun on your skin, how it reflects your shadow when you walk or the shadows of trees, houses or parked cars, walking on the beach in the morning or late afternoon on your Vacation, opening up the shades and blinds in your house to let the Sunshine in, just being able to do all the little everyday things we all take for granted.

All of that would be lost forever if you became a Vampire. But you would have to weigh it against what you would be getting in return. Would it be a fair trade off? I can't speak for anyone else, but it would seem you would be getting a lot more in the end than what you would be losing. At least that's my opinion. Lestat is very unique among Vampires on the one hand he hates what he knows he must do in order to survive because of the monster that he is but then on the other hand he longs to become human again. He is a Vampire with a real conscious, however he doesn't mind killing those people that he feels deserves to die like Drug Dealers, Criminals who prey upon people.

These Drug Dealers and Criminals are the sort of people Society as a whole would never miss in the first place because they are the leeches of Society and cause nothing but pain not only physical pain of course but also the scars from psychological pain as well, misery, loneliness, a dependence on a drug habit that is hard for them kick with out some help, being looked down upon as an outcast from Society and having to struggle to live on a regular day to day basis and any number of other problems as well. In a sense you could sat that Lestat is the Judge, Jury and also the Executioner too in dealing with the Criminal element. A kind of Vampire vigilante out to help those who need help and out to deal a swift blow of Justice to those he deems fit to get rid of. Lestat of course may have his own faults and problems but he also has his own sense of values and does what he thinks is right at the time. And he has also been know to be a Rock Star too performing in front of thousands of screaming, adoring fans at his Rock Concerts.

The six billion people happy to kill you would be a fair downside, too.

Of course that would be a huge downer in that respect especially since so many Vampire movies have been made and a ton of Vampire books have been written telling everyone what a Vampire's strengths and weaknesses are, however IF you were the kind of Vampire that COULD go outside in the broad daylight then you would appear to be just like a normal person to everyone else and wouldn't have to worry about someone finding your secret lair where you lay domant and vulnerable during the daylight hours where someone would be more than happy to put a stake through your heart while you sleep in the coffin. That is of course the image of the Dracula movies we all know.

Vampires are supposed to cast no reflections in a mirror, can't cross a running stream, are afraid of Garlic, Sunlight is deadly to them, Holy Water is a very useful weapon against a Vampire, Vampires shy away from the Cross and what it represents, a stake through the heart and then decapitating the head of the Vampire is a way to make the Vampire won't rise up again.

It is also said that if a Vampire comes to a cross road with several different paths it won't know which path to chose and will stand there all night just trying to decide which one it will take then when the Sunrises it will be too late. However, even if the Sunlight does kill a Vampire they can still come back to life again later on like in the Cool old British Hammer Films with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. If some blood should get on the grave of the Vampire by accident or someone goes there to resurrect the Vampire it can come back to life again.

Of course, it would depend on which version of vampire you'd be. Beatles, you're right about your last msg. The pathways, etc. It all depends on which vampire you're becoming and what part of the world they're from. LOL

I'd still do it!

I would totally become a vampire!! I agree, as long as it's not like Dracula lol. But i would LOVE to be like twilight vampires (Alice or Rosalie for sure) But it would kinda be sad to have to kill things to live. I would always have to live with the guilt and i dont think i could take it. I could drink animal blood.... but i wouldnt be as satisfied. IDK, i think i would, but it would be a really long life to spend alone.... id do it if i had a bf to come with me lol

If I recall correctly, Lestat considered himself a master of the "little drink" - where he would take a small amount of blood from several people instead of just one. He used to do this in nightclubs and other places where the lighting was low and a little physical affection would not be suspicious. The series "Moonlight" showed a private club where vampires and donors mingled - it came off as a sort of low-key sex club. In any metropolitan area, this type of drinking could no doubt sustain a vampire quite well.
