So did anybody get any books for Christmas that they want to mooch?

You know that book someone gave you because:
1. They don't know your taste and gave you something you'd never read.
2. You already have a copy.
3. You have already read it and don't care to read again.

Me either. :(
4SqueakyChu
So why didn't you participate in LT's Secret Santa?
5k00kaburra
No books for me either. :( I wasn't able to participate in LT's Secret Santa because I didn't have $25, but I comfort myself with the thought that I have plenty to read anyway.

I chose a few books that I wanted for Christmas so there aren't going to be listed on Bookmooch quite yet...

I'm so sad to hear so many of you didn't get books for Christmas! I'm not bragging, just very excited when I tell you that my boss gave me a book store gift card, which I used to secure copies of The Frozen Thames, The Discovery of France and The Book of Air and Shadows.
My husband gave me The Story of Edgar Sawtelle (yay!) and a German historical crime mystery called Death and the Devil by Frank Schatzing (but the title and author's names won't load as Touchstone links - sniff). You can link to it here: http://www.librarything.com/work/book/39562961
Okay - get to the point, starfishian!
My mom gave me a copy of How to Talk so Kids will Listen and Listen so Kids will Talk, but I'd already mooched a copy a couple of weeks ago. I've put the mooched copy back up on BookMooch in case anyone is interested.
Happy Christmas, readers!

I gave everybody I knew a pretty strict wishlist, but I did get one book that I might put up for mooching after I browse through it. Our Dumb World by The Onion, which is a gag gift but probably not that will last past the second reading...

I got some books but they won't be up for mooching. So far I got:
In Darkest Alaska: Travel and Empire Along the Inside Passage by Robert Campbell and Drawing and Painting Plants by Christina Brodie

No, no, no - you can't have mine! ;)
I was given Boswell's Presumptuous Task, Dr. Johnson & Mr. Savage, Lisa Jardine's new Going Dutch: How England Plundered Holland's Glory, What Did the Ancient Israelites Really Eat?, Apprentice: My Life in the Kitchen, by Jacques Pepin, and A Cordiall Water, by M.F.K. Fisher. I can't bear to share.
And the cookbook my mother compiled from my great-grandmother's recipe cards? Need you ask??? ;)

I don't celebrate Christmas but if I did I would have got myself books for Christmas.
13Moniica
I got Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult. ^^; I've still got a lot to read, however, so I'm not sure if it will be up for mooching for a while, if at all.
14bookel
I don't think I'll be putting this up for mooch. Besides, there are copies on BM already. I was given The Redemption of Althalus
by David Eddings. It will take some time to read it at 913 pages! I also was given kitchen scales that I requested, yay! I'll be able to determine the most economical postage now. And whether I can squeeze in any extra books for the same price. :)

As to why I personally did not participate in the Secret Santa I am with valkylee... I did not have the $25 to do so.
I hope the rest of you got wonderful books though!

I badly wanted to do the Secret Santa as well but it came up right at a time I was afraid I was about to start bouncing things off my bank account. I couldn't risk it.
I got about 7 manga but nothing I think I'll want to part with.

Not for Christmas, but we just found a big box of my books from when I was a teenager at the back of my parents' wardrobe. (Buried treasure! Exciting!!) They're mostly teen light reading, with some books for younger kids. At a glance, lots of Roald Dahl, Enid Blyton and Sweet Valley High. When I've sorted through them for any I want to keep, and when I can afford to send them out (probably the second half of January), they'll all go on BookMooch.
18starfishian
>17 Eat_Read_Knit: Enid Blyton! How exciting (especially becuase my daughter just started reading chapter books!!!).
I just put a copy of Ghostwalk by Rebecca Stott on BookMooch if anyone is interested. It's on a lot of wishlists...

i did not get any books for Christmas...just a $100 gift card for Amazon..from my brother...hope you all had Happy Holidays anyway...
21RidgewayGirl
I didn't get any books for Christmas as everyone has finally learned and now just gets me bookstore giftcards or unrelated items. I gave a lot of books, however...

20: $100 gift card to Amazon?! Wooooah! Nice!
We were very mega-strapped for cash this Christmas, so I didn't expect much, but I'm happy with what I got. No books, though, although really I prefer nowadays that my mom *not* buy me books, because it's so much cheaper to get them through BM, and like I said cash is mega-tight.
However! I got $100 from my grandparents (which was totally unexpected because we aren't exactly on good terms), and I fully intend to go on a book-shopping spree at the local Hospic thrift store after the holidays. On Saturdays they have half-off on most everything, and books are usually like 15-20cents each. *will be grabbing tons for BM, too!*

National Book Tokens?
25Eat_Read_Knit
>24 infiniteletters: They are gift vouchers accepted by pretty much every book shop in the UK.

Nothing that I want to Mooch so far. Although I am starting to go through the books I bought at the Penguin Putnam sale in November and most of them will wind up on the swaps.
Holding off on BM for the moment since I have way too many points there and need to build up on one of the others....

Don't you have national book tokens in Canada? Here in the Netherlands, they are the archetypal gift token - if you don't know what to get someone for their birthday, you give them a book token.
29bettie
I get book tokens every christmas and birthday from my mother. I always look forward to ordering eight or nine books from my local book shop and not having to pay for them! :)

I love book tokens, they are my family's standby for gifts!! I got £25 worth this christmas :)
31starfishian
All we have in Canada are plastic gift cards that can be used only at the store from which they were acquired. Great revenue source for the country-wide-Internet-based-mega-chains when you need a gift for someone at the other end of the country, but not so helpful in prompting people to visit their own local mom & pop shops... sigh.

True, true. As a fellow Canadian I always get gift certificates from Chapters/Indigo/Coles during the holidays, but I'm trying to buy people books and certificates from local independent stores too.

After giving my family a long list of books I wanted, I ended up with not a single book "on principle", as they say that I have too many! It was upsetting, I was the only one who didn't receive a book for Christmas!
I did, luckily, participate in the Secret Santa though, and received two great books from my lovely Santa! (Neither of which I will be listing, sorry!)

Book tokens?! Sounds cool! We have gift certificates to either Books a Million, Borders, or Barnes and Noble, and occasionally local book stores have them as well.
I got NINE!!! (very excited) books: Certain Poor Shepherds, The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Sovay, The Twilight Companion, The Summoner, Paper Cutouts (my one craft book), Melting Stones, and The New Hymn and Tune Book (Methodist hymnbook from 1887).
My ninth book was Hang a Thousand Trees with Ribbons by Ann Rinaldi, which is currently on BookMooch, as I already have a copy and couldn't exchange the gift. It's about Phyllis Wheatley.

#33 amckie - you're the second person I've heard of who didn't get any books because family thought you already had too many. I'm sorry that they don't undertand what being a book lover means.
36Heather19
33 and 35: *rolls eyes* My mom just nixed a trip to the library because I have too many unread books. They don't understand! lol
38Macophile
My mom and grandma say I have too many books... my grandma's favorite saying... "What do you want all them books for anyway?".... I'm like: "To read?" :)
39infiniteletters
Let alone the "have you read all those books?"
40Macophile
That's another one... except anyone who knows me knows I have... they always see a different book in my hand... even my Dr's have started to remark on the fact that I always seem to have a different book every time they see me. :D

> 35, 36, 38, etc. - I am very glad to hear that I'm not the only one with a crazy family! haha
Yes, I think it is the growing "to be read" pile that made them refuse. One of my sisters even works at a bookstore though! One would think that she, at least, would understand... I am tricking them for the upcoming birthday by asking for books in Spanish as I am starting to learn it ;) As I currently have no Spanish books, they can't technically say I have too many... *insert maniacal laugh here*

@ 33, 35, 36 et al -- Hah. Sounds familiar!!
My husband likes to bug me about my 'book habit' too. While I was in school, I used to have a great come-back to his criticisms, though. I was a literature major, so I always reminded him to be grateful that I was studying BOOKS and not elephants, diamonds, or infectious diseases.... ;)
