My 999 Categories
1. Books from To Be Read pile
2. 1,001
3. Newbery Award Winners from Last Nine Years (when I was a kid I anticipated the Newbery Award announcements with the same breathless excitement I wait for the Pulitzer or National Book Award announcements today. Yes, I was a nerdly little girl even way back then).
4. Theology (I'm a seminarian, so theology reading is pretty much a given any year).
5. Books I skipped in college/grad school (I was an English major, and I'm ashamed to say I skipped quite a few essential works. Ditto for my first couple years of grad school).
6. Books NPR told me to read.
7. New in 2009
8. 2008's Cream o' the Crop (Award-winners in 2008)
9. Nonfiction

Newbery Medal-winning books from the last nine years. I was struck by the recent news reports on criticism of the Newbery Medal -- that "kids don't like them" and they're "too complicated". I decided to see for myself.

2009: TBA Jan. 26
2008: Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! Voices from a Medieval Village
2007: The Higher Power of Lucky
2006: Criss Cross
2005: Kira-Kira
2004: The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread
2003: Crispin: the Cross of Lead
2002: A Single Shard
2001: A Year Down Yonder

Alright. I'm doing some category editing ... combining category #8 and category #6 into one called "Raves" to cover books that either won awards in 08 or were generally acknowledged (by NPR and the handful of book blogs I keep up with) as being good stuff. And I'm adding a Chicago category, since I'm psyched that I'll be back there in '09 (I had the misfortune of spending the entirety of '08 AWAY from the City of Broad Shoulders ... and I'm ready to go back home. Some celebratory Chicago reading is in order).

So now the categories are
1. TBR
2. 1001
3. Newbery
4. Theology
5. Skipped books
6. Raves
7. New in 09
8. Chicago authors
9. Nonfiction
