A really good selection of books here. I also have Kevin Crossley-Holland's The Norse Myths in my 999 list, I loved his Gatty's Tale.

Have you thought of Diane Mott Davidson, Christina Dodd or Jude Deveraux in your D author category? They're a few of my favorites.

Good to see someone else doing Dystopian literature. I've just read Brave New World as my first book for that category and loved it. I'd be interested in hearing what you thought of it when you read it. I'll probably read Fahrenheit 451 from your list too and perhaps The Road.
I like your D category.

I'm reading Fahrenheit 451 right now, and I can barely put it down.
Thanks, my D category is inspired from my initial for my last name, (Dobson) when I attempted the 888 Challenge I did "J" names. Good luck!

Just finished my first book! Here's my review Fahrenheit 451

#16> Your review of Brave New World was enlightening, as it's on my TBR list for this year. A lot of lists overlap and on some of the others I'd like to see what you think as they're some of my favorites (like The Amber Spyglass, I love that whole trilogy :). I'll be interesting to keep up with your thread!

Jules - I've read your Brave New World review. I enjoyed the book more than you did, but I too was initially disappointed by Bernard's behaviour in the latter part of the novel. However thinking about it, I think it was understandable as a lot of his behaviour earlier and attitudes towards the society were because he was already an outsider, whereas Helmholz was genuine in his opposition. As for the science side of it, I tried not to get too bogged in the terms and things and just excepted it!

I have a category for dystopian lit as well and thought you might be interested in a quote from Alberto Manguel's A Reading Diary. Manguel is rereading The Island of Dr Moreau and he writes "the utopian ideal had long faded into its shadow image: the dystopia, the place that allows our worst qualities to bloom unhampered, like carnivorous plants."

Oohh! I really liked that Quote. I think I have the Island of Dr. Moreau on another list of this years reading challenge.
27sanddancer
You are racing through those dypstopian books! I'm doing the same topic and didn't have The Children of Men in my list and don't think I'll bother to add it either.
28bookwormjules
Racing through the dystopian books is partly due to the library. I put a hold on a bunch of books, and those ones where available first. So they were read quickly. I would have had clockwork orange and v for vendetta read by now, but I mixed due dates up for clockwork, and had to return it, (it had holds, didn't want to pay fees) and V for Vendetta I missed the hold, because I was on vacation. Also, they, for the most part, are good books. Although, a little depressing at times. What authors are you doing for your dystopian lit section?

I had The Children of Men on my list (it's now removed). I highly recommend Clockwork Orange. Once you get used to Burgess' language, it's a short, addictive read. It's interesting that Part 3 was not published in the first american edition of the book and not included in Kubrick's movie.

I've read Fahrenheit 451 and Brave New World which you have also read. Plus The Declaration by Gemma Malley which is a Young Adult dystopian novel. I plan to read Handmaid's Tale, The Road and something by John Wyndham but not sure what yet. The rest are still open.
32bookwormjules
Handmaids Tale was a fantastic books, one of my favourites. I'd be interested in your opinion of it when you read it.

Nice review of The Gathering! Those were pretty much my thoughts about it, also. The strange thing about this book, though, is that I read it more than a year ago, and it keeps coming back to me, and I seem to remember it more clearly than other books I read then (and liked better).
35bookwormjules
I agree, that the book is one of the ones that will stay with you. And glad I'm not the only one who thought this way.

Bella likes to read, but I don't think she's a bookworm like alot of readers I've seen in the blogverse.
48cmbohn
I have read both Cancer Ward and Castle Rackrent! Neither one seems to be very popular, so I'm happy to see someone else reading them. I'll be anxious to see what you think.

Another book to add, I've been negecting this challenge while I concentrate on others, and just realized I forgot to post a review. So I'll post both here.
