Read this in 1996 or thereabouts... Jack London makes a brief appearance, during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Anyone know what this might be?

PS--the main characters is female; she imagines at one point that there's a romantic connection with Jack London, even though he's married.

There's a book called San Francisco Earthquake, 1906 by Kathleen Duey, which features a young woman who works in a hotel.

It is the glittering center of the new West, brash young San Francisco, dominated by the luxurious Palace Hotel, where tycoons mingle with famous artists, politicians, and the young American aristocracy. Where 18-year-old housekeeper Sierra O'Nielle, still smarting from a flirtatious gentleman's snub, realizes it is time to face reality and remember her place -- until she sees Joseph Harlan, the handsome son of a wealthy cattle rancher. The sizzling electricity that flows between them is impossible to ignore....

I haven't actually read it, but I imagine that Jack London might have been staying in the hotel. This book was not published until 1999, however.

I have this book at home, if it's the right one. I can't remember the name or author...I am going to be there this weekend and I will look it up for you. It tells the story of the quake from the viewpoints of several different people, including an elderly photographer, a guy who works for the city, a woman with two children, etc. Does this sound like the right one?

3: No, I don't think that's it...

4: Honestly, I can't remember any details. But thanks for the help!

I was wrong then, my bad. If you're interested though, the book I was thinking of is Aftershocks by Richard S. Wheeler. Glad you found what you were looking for! :)
