Ok so a friend of mine will go to the states and will be able to bring me only one book from there, so I have to choose what book to buy, I thought of several books I have read about here on LT and HE, but the problem with many of them is that they are part of a series and I wouldn't like to start a series and not have the next part of the series here next to me, so my question would be what would should I get? I have thought about The book of lost things since I have read a lot about it here. You can check my library here and see the kinda of books that I like, and any comment will be appreciated.

Thanks :D

You need Princess Bride. It's the law.

Very true.

Don't listen to them. Get Fight Club.

Don't type about Fight Club? Don't post about Fight Club?

It's more of a guideline, anyway.

ONE??? Just one?? What an impossible choice!

This his hard. Book of Lost Things is one of my all-time favorites, so I have to agree that would be an excellent choice. But Princess Bride is another favorite, so how can I advise on one and not the other?

I'm a little hesitant to bring any other book into the discussion, what with two amazing books already on the table. Are you sure your friend can't bring two? I mean, two isn't really much more to bring than one. ;)

The Book Thief by Markis Zusak.
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman.

Hmm ... Ron, would your friend bring you four books?

After all, four isn't much more than two...

#2,3,7: Jp, MrsG and lefty: I already have The Princess Bride on my computer so that's why I wouldn't like to get that one...and since you have recommended it so much I'll try to read it soon

#4: MrA I hadn't thought of that one....interesting choice...and I did like the movie...but I can't mention it or I'll break the rules...

#8: The Book Thief is a book that I have seen and can actually get it here in spanish (and I'm planning to get it soon), so that one would be off the table, and Neverwhere may be a good option since I read Stardust and really liked it...

#7: lefty you can recommend me as many good books that you can think of and really like, as long as they aren't in a series, the more feedback I get, the better...I don't want to have a book here and read about another book I would have liked better here on LT :S

#9,10: I would love to get a gazillion books I have either read on here or seen in the HEers libraries

Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynn Jones
Technically not a series because the sequel was only set in the same world and the characters from this book only make an appearance.

Just saying. :o)

Why don't you just beg us all to send you one book each?

I was starting to think the same thing, JP. Then we can even scheme together to get complete series.

I'm up for sending one book as long as you allocate me the last in a series so that it has time to get from the UK via snailmail!!

Do you speak spanish ron?

Yep it's my mother tongue and for the other suggestions I will take a deep look at them when I get the time coz I'm here for a short time and it is a difficult decision after all... ;)

Ren,

I've been meaning to reply to your question for a few days, but just now got to it. I work at a library, so hopefully I'll be able to be of some help.

I would suggest The Book Thief, but other people have already done so, and you mentioned that you might get it in Spanish. I also know that certain book series, His Dark Materials, Chronicles of Narnia , and Lord of the Rings for example, have an all-in-one book (i.e. all the books in the series combined into 1 larger book). However, you have already read His Dark Materials (though there's nothing wrong with rereading).

I noticed that you like thrillers and Stephen King in your library. How about authors like John Grisham, Michael Crichton, or Tom Clancy. They have similar writing styles and write thrillers; though Grisham writes legal thrillers, whereas Crichton writes science thrillers, King writes horror thrillers, and Clancy writes political thrillers.

I'm a big fan of classics, so may I recommend The Little Prince, The Iliad, The Odyssey, The Aeneid, or any other classic.

Do you like nonfiction? Do you have any interests such as sports, nutrition, politics, etc. that I (or any HE member) could find a good nonfiction book to suit your interests.

Hope this helps.

I'm thinking similar thoughts as jp (#12) and lefty (#13). Are you a BookMooch member, Ron?

Aside from The Book of Lost Things, I wonder if you'd like The Journal of Curious Letters, a book I haven't read yet but understand it's something Harry Potter fans should like. I know elbakerone has read it and seemed to really enjoy it. :)

Since you've read all of Stephenie Meyers other books I wonder if you would like her standalone book, The Host. It's not a vampire book at all but check the link perhaps and see what you think of it.

I second The Host I actually thought it was a better story than the Twilight books.

I agree but that's not saying much.

I'd vote for The Host as well

#18:06wingert: It does help and a lot!! thanks for the suggestions, I think the classics you mentioned I will try to get them in Spanish too, since it is my mother tongue and it would be easier for me to understand them that way but thanks again for the recommedations :D

#19-22: I have read the twilight books coz a friend lent them to me, but I'm not really a huge Stephenie Meyer fan *ducks at the things thrown at me* but I respect and will consider that book when I make my choice...or I may wait until my friend who is a Mrs.Meyer fan buys it and lends it to me....

and K the journal of curious letters does strike my attention ever since I saw it in one of your photos of your TBR piles, so thanks for that suggestion...and I haven't joined BookMooch to be completely honest because I always lend my books to my friends and that way it has created a kind of bookclub and we pass our books from one hand to another and I cannot bring myself to pass my books to someone else...not yet at least.

And to everyone in HE who would like a book in Spanish that I can get my hands on I would be willing to do a swap (I mean you send me one book and I'll send you one) just leave me a message in my profile...and give me sometime to find out which is the best mail service to send packages outside my country

and THANKS to everyone for your suggestions and I'm still open for more...

Ron

Hello HEers I have wonderful news and I know you guys are the ones who will appreciate it....I found out that the brother of another friend is going to the states and he will be able to bring me any books I would like!!! That means that there are no quantity limit but of course there is a economical limit (I'm not rich enough to get all the books I would like) Ok so far I have decided for sure on 2 books which are:

  • The book of lost things

  • Chocolat

  • And I'm considering a series that both a friend of mine and me want to read that is the Resident Evil novels series... I'm considering too the book MrA mentioned in post #4 (I made you scroll up didn't I kik)

    That's it....

    P.S. YAYYYYYYYYY!!!! (I know PIANOOO!!)

ETA: If you know a series (try to keep the series under 5 installments please) or a book that you think I should absolutely have to get please do tell me and I will take a long and thoughtful look at them during this weekend...Oh and I think I will order the books on Sunday the 15th

    That's great news, Ron! :)

I was staying away from recommending series before, but now...
    The Warrior Heir
Fly by Night (okay, it's a standalone)
    The Lightning Thief
    Tunneling (standalone)

    27MellieT
    Feb 11, 2009, 9:32 am

most of my series are more than 5 books, but I will recommend the Uglies series, which I found was very good.

#26: Thanks for the suggestions(and the tomatoes) K! I'll take a look at the books as soon as I get the time

#27: Bella which series did you consider, I may take a look at them and if I find a box set of it I may buy them even if it exceeds the 5 books.

I think you threw tomatoes at him K. Regarding Twilight. ;o)

    31MellieT
    Feb 11, 2009, 2:31 pm

I would recommend The Women's Murder Club Series By James Patterson, but I don't think there is a box set of those... and the Patricia Cornwell Scarpetta Series but yet again I don't think It is a box set. I do know that they now come with 2 or 3 books to one now though. Patterson is 7 books (so far) and Scarpetta is 17

    Twilight?....*rereads thread*

Oh! So I did! I had completely forgotten. KIK. Thanks, jp!

    Feb 11, 2009, 9:13 pm

LOL! Yeah I think I have enough tomatoes to do a bologna sauce for the pasta! :D

#31: Thanks for the suggestions Bella I'll look at the Patterson series but to be honest I don't think that I'll get the Scarpetta since they are so many....but thanks for the input :D
