I've been reading Lindsay Davis's series of books about Falco, a private eye in ancient Rome and really enjoying them. Apart from well-plotted mysteries they evoke everyday life in ancient Rome with all sorts of fascinating details, such as the fact that urine was used to bleach togas white! Steven Saylor is the author of another ancient Roman series - anyone read his books?

Me! Me! I have! I also am crazy about John Maddox Roberts' SPQR series and David Wishart's Marcus Corvinus series.

Although a lot of non-mystery books about Rome are mentioned, a lot are wonderful (speaking from personal experience) and interesting from a historical perspective.
Edited for clarity.

Thanks for the suggestions and the link Storeetllr - didn't realise there was so much in the Roman detective genre. It's nice to have new authors to explore.
